Identity and Date of Manufacture of S&W Revolvers

Radagast, sorry that was my fault for not researching the topic better. The S/N on the 19-4 stamped on the bottom of the frame grip is 95K64XX.

Regarding the 586 there is "M" stamped above the S/N so I believe the modification was done.

c) grips shape (round or square) - Not sure on this one, grips seem "standard" - smooth curves at the front and back, but flat on the sides. Not sure if this is helpful, but the right side has a "normal" arch to the grip, and the left side has a "U" shaped cut out. Also, there is a screw on the frame that is below the center of the cylindar.
d) number of shots/cylinder bores - 6 shot
e) type of sights. - fixed front sight, with a "groove" along the top, that goes the length of the cylinder.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip - no serial number on bottom of grip, number 225XX on "swing arm" of the cylinder, and then the same 225XX on the frame where the cylinder attaches, but there is an offset "7" above, to the left.
g) Model number if it is under the crane. "CTG" is on the barrel. Wait, now I've found it: C3079XX
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

Your Model 581 Distinguished Service Magnum was manufactured in 1984.
The grips appear to be a special order item from S&W.

There is a recall on this particular model, with some magnum ammo the primer can flow back into the firing pin bushing, locking upthe gun. Under the recall S&W will pay shippng both ways and install a new firing pin & bushing.

If your gun has been modified under the recall there should be an M stamped after the model number under the cylinder yoke. If you wish to have your gun modified give S&W a call and they will send you a shipping label.

Your .38 Miltary & Police was manufactured in the period 1954 to 1956. Serial range for those years was C277555 to C402923. This model is also known asthe Pre-Model 10, as model numbers were itroduced in 1957 and the .38 Military & Police was designated the Model 10.

Squareles67's pic above shows a square butt gun, a round butt would have a slight curve towards the front at the rear of the grip.
It sounds like you have target grips from a later model on your gun, the cut out on the right side is to allow the use of a speedloader.
The additional screw in the frame was used until 1962. If there is a screw in the side plate just in front of the hammer then you have a '5 screw' gun (four in the side plate, one in the front of the frame), if there is no screw then it is a '4 screw' gun. The fifth screw was deleted in 1955.

225xx & 7 are assembly numbers used to track parts in the factory, these have no meaning after the gun is assembled.

If it is hammerless then it is a .32 Safety Hammerless 1st Model manufactured between 1894 & 1902 in the serial range 53252 to 91417.

If it is double action with an exposed hammer then it is a .32 Double Action 4th Model manufactured between 1883 & 1996 in the serial range 1 to 209301. This would be considered an antique by BATF.

If it is a single action with an exposed hammer and spur trigger then it is a .32 Single Action (Model One & a Half) manufactured between 1878 & 1892 in the serial range 1 to 97574.

The 625-3 was produced between 1990 & 1993. The Standard Catalog of S&W notes that serial numbers in the BPK range shipped in December of that year, so late 1993 production with shipping in early 1994 seems likely.

The New Model Navy was a Remington percussion revolver in .36 caliber. Could you post a pic of your gun? I will try to identify it. If it is a S&W product it could be a First Model Russian, New Model Number Three, a .44 Double Action or a .44 Double Action Wesson Favourite.

Ok, you are looking at a .44 Double Action First Model, also known as the New Model Navy No.3 Revolver (Mea Culpa, I wasn't aware of the navy designation).

The .44 Double Action was manufactured between 1881 & 1913, with all frames completed prior to 1899, so the entire production run and its variants are classified as antiques by the ATF.
Serial numbers in the range 8900 to 10600 were manufactured in 1882 & 1883, so its a fairly safe bet the gun you are looking at dates to 1883/84.

There was also a .44-40 chambered version manufactured between 1886 & 1913 in a seperate serial range as the .44 Double Action Frontier. Again all frames were manufactured bwefore 1899.

Thank you in advance for any help on the approximate date of birth for my new purchase of an excellent piece of stainless steel art. Boxed, two sets of grips (stock and banana), papered (no bill of sale, but several pages taken from THE SHOTGUN NEWS with gun prices for many different manufacturers of 1982). Listed was, "Our Buy Price," and "Your Cash Price," and a column of prices for credit card buyers. The price listed for my Model 60 (no dash) was $385.00.
