I guess I should explain I was the one with the 38 special that has the s934 number on the butt plate. I see lots of guys telling me this is an incomplete number but that is all there is on the gun. Sorry it took so long to reply I have been in a remote logging camp for a while no internet

Your Model 14-4 K38 Masterpiece was manufactured in 1977. Yes thats the six inch barrel, which was pretty much the standard on that model. there were a couple of small runs of 4 inch barrels. The 8&3/8 inch barrel was also available but is rare.

Prodigalshooter: Your Model 15-3 Combat Masterpiece was manufactured in 1970.

Your Model 38 Bodyguard Airweight was manufactured in 1975 or 1976. Serial range for those years was J250001 to J370000, so late 1975 seems likely.

Thanks so much, I was guessing mid to late 70's by looking at some of the other "J" serial numbers. Thanks again!

a) caliber 357/38
b) bbl length 3"
c) grips shape Round
d) number of shots/cylinder bores 7
e) type of sights Adj
f) serial number CLCO1XX
g) Model number if it is under the crane. 586-5

I am looking for a DOB. Thanks, gentlemen.

Krusty:
Your Model 586-5 L Comp was manufactured in either 2000 or 2004. These were a special order Performance Center gun for Camfour Distributors. Look for the product code if you have the original box. 170170 is for 2000, 170248 is for 2004. The CLC serial prefix was used for this model. The Standad Catalog of S&W does not state the number manufactured; as your serial number is quite low I think your gun would be from the 2000.

Radagast,
Thank you for the reply. The product code is 170170. 2000 it is.

Model 49 DOB

Another one for you Radagast if you please:

a) .38 Special
b) 1-5/8
c) round
d) 5
e) fixed
f) 4J17XX
g) Model 49
h) nickel

New in the box with all the original paperwork. Supposedly never fired, which I believe because only one of the cylinders has powder marks on the end.Even has the original paper wrapping. A fine example.

Thanks!:)

Your Model 15-2 Combat Masterpiece was manufactured in 1968.

Your Model 49 Bodyguard Stainless was manufactured in 1971 or 1972. This wasd the period that the J 'floated' within the numerals of the serial number. As the sequence ended at 999J99 and your number is quote low in the range I thing 1971 is pretty certain.

Brockak47:
Your Model 60 Chiefs Special Stainless was manufactured in 1973 or 1974. Serial range for those years was J100000 to J250000, with a serial number right in the middle of the range I wouldn't want to pick which year.

Brockak47: With the corrected serial number yoru gun was manufactured in the period 1974 to 1977. Serial range was R100000 to R190000. So 1975 or 1976 seems likely.
Most of the answers I give come from the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition by Supica & Nahas, Gun Digest Books.
