Hi again Radagast,

Wondering about the birth date of my new friend, a S&W model 19-4 nickel snubby with serial # 91K3469?

Thanks.

Model 38

A: 38 spl
B: 2"
C:Round w/ diamonds
D: 5 shot
E: Fixed
F: 258XXX
G: Mod 38 no dash.

It's a co-worker's. I got it narrowed down to 1957-1968 but that's as close as I can get. Thanks!

bwsmith2850:
Your co-worker's Model 38 Bodyguard Airweight falls into the period 1959 to 1962. Serial range for that period was 163051 to 295000. So I'd guesstimate 1961 or early 1962.

Hi guys, DOB of j frame would be appreciated, also any other info!
A).38 Spl.
B)1 7/8
c)round
D)5
e)fixed

Your Model 642-1 Centennial Airweight was manufactured in 1999.

Recent production airweights are coated with a clear coat which peels when exposed to solvent cleaners such as Hoppes. I don't know which year this coating was introduced, so I suggest you start a new thread or phone S&W and ask before using a solvent on your gun.
I think lead away clothes have the same effect.

If you dry fire the gun and see sparks come out of the firign pin hole, don't panic. This is a known issue with Centennials and doesn't seem to have any bearing on reliability.

Number on the crane is an assembly number, used to track parts in the factory. It has no meaning now that the gun is assembled.

I just bought a Smith-Wesson 625-8 Performance Center with the serial CRY****. Could anyone help me place the approx date of manufacture?

A).45 ACP
B) 4"
c) Round
D) 6
e) Adjustable
f) CRY****
g) 625-8

Also, does anyone else know if the 625 Jerry Miculek grips are any wider and more handfilling that the ugly technicolor grips that come with the gun?

Thank you.

Railrunner85:
Your Model 29-3 .44 Magnum was manufactured in late 1987 or early 1988. By that date it should actually be a Model 29-3E with the endurance package design changes, but S&W never let parts go to waste, so its highly likely that it shipped in 1988 after the -3E changes were announced. The barrel length should be 6 inches, the 6.5 inch barrel was dropped in 1979.

Barr:
Your gun doesn't match the performance center listings in the Standard Catalog of S&W. The 625-8 .45 ACP was introduced with the internal lock in 2001. Under the normal production it does list a 4 inch Jerry Miculek Special in June 2006, matt finish, rubber grips / combat stocks, full lug barrel, patridge front sight, adjustable rear, Product Code 160936JM. I'm guessing this is your gun.

Thanks Rada, Are you saying that it does or does not have the endurance package, and is so is their some way other than the E that tells me it has the endurance package.

Need Birthdate Please

S&W Model 29-2. Nickle finish, six inch barrel.
Serial # N859819. Thanks in Advance.

Well excuse me!
I didn't do a search.

Maybe there are no results because nobody has been selling them lately??
I don't know.

But I did just do a search of S&W Model 36 on Auction Arms and got 13 hits on closed sales in the last 90 days.

Railrunner85:
I'm not a gunsmith just a guy with a reference book, so this is not gospel. AFAIK the endurance package was internal changes to keep the gun from going out of time when shot with magnum loads. The E would be the only evidence.
So lacking the E I would assume your gun does not have it. When S&W found parts in stock for the old configuration they would ship a gun in that configuration to use up the parts.

slimpickens:
The N8xxxxx range was used from 1980 to 1983. The 29-2 with six inch barrel was produced from 1979 to 1982. So 1980-1982 is the closest I can give you.

Raildriver:
I'm in Australia, so I don't have a good feel for American prices. So take the following with a grain of salt. Around $350 for a gun in excellent to as new in box condition seems to be about right, based on comments on the forum over the last year or so. Otherwise following RCmodels advice and digging around on the online auction sites is all I can suggest.

Thanks again Radagast!

It was his Dad's and he couldn't remember when Dad got it and unfortunately can't ask him anymore.

Radagast, thanks for the reply (4211) on the Centennial. Re coating, I usually (and in this case) use Breakfree for cleaning. After 13 years, coating probably gone anyway! I just traded a Witness for the 'J' frame, needed a pocket gun!

Katigroszek:
That serial number dates the gun to around May 1989. The 629-2 was produced in 1988 & 1989. In 1989 it was replaced by the 629-2E with internal modifications to improve timing durability.
