Ragagast, if I can ask you here..I have a 1982, 586 no dash. You mentioned in another thread about the recall for this model. I have had this Smith for over 15 years and had no problems. Is it necessary to send it in for the mod?

Probably not. If you haven't had any issues by now I doubt its going to come up in the future. But its your decision to make. I've only read three reports of guns locking up. IIRC all of them were stainless 686s.
FWIW I've been on gun forums since 1997ish starting with the old Shooters.com, THR since the beginning, TFL before that and I've answered most of the questions in this thread in the last 4 years.

Hmmm... Re-reading my last post, my attempt at humor may not have been clear. I was simply making the point that I'm an old gun forum nerd and reports of issues with the 686 are very rare.
Generally any report of a major issue will be blown out of proportion and argued to death on forums looking for a change from the inevitable 9mm vs .45 / Glock vs 1911 type arguments.
Even during the S&W boycott brought on by the previous owners deal with the Clinton regime the 686 firing pin issue was not brought up, even though there was a sudden outpouring of generic claims that S&W quality control and value was no better than Taurus.
TL,DR: If I was carrying one for self defense with magnum ammo, I would have the work done. Otherwise I personally would not bother. Only you can make the call re your gun.

Thanks. I do it because I enjoy it and it allows me to contribute to the shooting community. as for being from down under? Being the next superior step in the evolution of man is a plus point, not a negative. For example we have discovered a complete major food group to complement the original sugar, starch, grease and burnt crunchy bits. You need to try Vegemite.

It was the fifth design variant from the original .38 Safety Hammerless introduced in 1887. The 5th Model theoretically continued in production until 1940, demand would have been killed by the Great Depression and the introduction of the swing out cylinder .38/32 Terrier in 1936.

You have a Model 64-3 .38 Military & Police Stainless Heavy Barrel manufactured between 1977 & 1988. The serial number should be in the range D870001 to D999999 then 1D1 to 30D9291, after that the serial numbers ran in a range AAA0000 to BDC0001.
Check the serial number again and get back to me.
The gun is a K frame, Any aftermarket square butt K frame grips will fit it. It should be perfectly fine to shoot with any standard pressure or PlusP marked ammunition. Police only +P+ ammo should not be used as there is no industry standard for +P+.

looks like a 2 in barrel
a detroit police engraving on the back between the pearl handles.
