Hello All,

I have recently gotten heavy into IDPA and have been shooting my Stainless P226 (The one listed here: http://www.sigsauer.com/CatalogProductDetails/p226-stainless.aspx)

I love shooting it, but cannot determine if it is stock or enhanced Service Pistol.
I have been shooting ESP, but many guys at the matches think that perhaps I should be shooting SSP.
It is a discontinued model, so IDPA says that 20,000 have to have been made to qualify. How do I verify that?

Next up, the changes to the Gun:
Short Reach Trigger installed (that's the skinny one).
One trip to the Sig Custom shop for the "Action Enhancement Package" and the "Short Reset Trigger Package". (details at: http://www.sigsauer.com/Customshop/SpecialCTU.aspx)

So I am still thinking ESP, but maybe somebody with more info on the Rules can help me out?

Thanks!

In terms of the quantity produced, I'd just shoot it unless someone tries to tell you you can't.

In terms of the action, it is an SSP gun. DA/SA is normally SSP. It would also be legal for ESP stock if you wanted, or if you have made certain modifications like aftermarket controls (being likely the most common) you would be forced into ESP. The rulebook has a clearly defined list of allowed mods for all divisions.

But your biggest concern might be weight... the limit for SSP is now 43oz. Might be the same for other divisions as well. Check the very latest version of the rulebook. That gun is probably really close if it isn't over.

Edit: if the short reset trigger is a factory part, or factory available on any variation of that gun, it is still be legal for SSP. Aftermarket controls not manufactured by Sig would put you into ESP.

The website spec says 42.2... I'd put it on a scale before taking it to a major match where they might weigh it.

ny32182 covered it nicely, but it's probably worth noting that if you shoot it in SSP, you'll have to start with the hammer down.

I like the M&P, but I don't understand pistols like I do wheelguns.

At any rate, I shoot my M&P as much as my wheelguns lately, which is to say not much: For a little mental R&R and to extend my skillset a bit, I caught the rifle bug last year. I'll be back, though. ;)

UPDATE:
While not overly scientific, I did weigh the pistol last night on a bathroom scale (that measures 0.1 pounds) and it came in at 2.5 pounds or 40 ounces. Looks like I am good to go!

Thanks Everyone for your replies!

Remember to include an empty magazine in the weight, if you did not. As long as it's under 43 I'd shoot it in SSP and be happy.

Nice! I don't shoot IDPA so I'm not up on the rules, but I do shoot a standard P226 with Grayguns action package and short reset trigger. Your stainless should be real competitive in SSP I'd think with the extra weight. I bet that thing shoots fast between the weight and trigger work.

Note to self, if I ever do shoot IDPA, purchase stainless P226...

It is actually a fantastic competition piece. I have been placing 2nd in ESP and now SSP (beaten by the same guy in two separate match locations :cuss:).

The Stainless I have is (sadly) discontinued but it is one of my favorite shooters.
Picking up a 226 Elite Dark next Saturday!

Don't sell yourself short....

Finishing well in your IDPA matches has more to do with shooter, than gun. Don't sell yourself short. That firearms is a beautiful thing, but it is the hand on the grip making it work.

^^^ solid point right there. There is also something to be said for understanding the game and not making mental errors that will cost you in procedural error points.

The ole principal of is it the indian or the arrow?
