Is there somewhere I can go to get a list of pistols legal for IDPA. I want to know what I have that I could use to get started in local matches.
I have some stock 1911's in .45, A stock EMP in 9MM(except I have changed the ambi safety to a single one. - ditto on the .45's), A stock XD SC in .40, A Stock Witness Elite Target.
I think that is all I have which may be OK & I would be interested in useing.
Thanks. :)

You can probably look at the IDPA rulebook, but in a nutshell:

1911 with 8+1 capacity are perfect for CDP class (they dominate the class).

EMP would be in ESP, where max capacity is 10+1. I dont know the capacity of an EMP, but it may put you at a disadvantage if it's less than 9+1

The XD would also be in ESP. .40 factory loads put you at a slight disadvantage because you will be on a level playing field with factory 9mm loads, but you will have more recoil. Also, the small grip will be a considerable disadvantage.

Assuming the witness elite target fits in the box (I dont know how big they are) it would probably also be ESP.

I would shoot whichever gun you are best with, however, and not worry too much about class.

But if you are out to be competitive, your best bet is in CDP with a 1911 5" in .45ACP and some 8 round mags.

CDP= custom defensive pistol

ESP= enhanced service pistol

BUG= back-up gun (usually snubbies, 5 rounds max.)

SSP= stock service pistol

ESR= enhanced service revolver

SSR= stock service revolver

Whoa! :what: More stuff, bug, ssr, cdp, etc. etc.

I just got some good advise. Show up, show an interest, ask questions, listen.

I think that is what I need to do. Thanks for the answers and any more help will be appreciated. :)

Walkalong, I shoot both an Elite MAtch in .40 and a Tactical size XD9, both are ESP in IDPA shooting. I shot the XD in tonights shoot and it did quite well. All I have to remember is that long trigger pull.

Walkalong:

As someone who went through this process at the beginning of last summer, I would at least skim the rule book at www.idpa.com it will at least make you familiar with terms and such.

I agree the way to get an understanding is to go and ask questions.

Good Luck and enjoy.

Jeff

Good call Jim,
While you are waiting for the book to come in the mail hit the main site and look at the "new shooter manual" & "how to unload and show clear" pages. These two areas are extremely helpful to have a safe and fun shoot!
