This Camillus was produced squarely in the war years of WWII and while just a simple 2 blade jack pattern it is the inset in the celluloid scales that makes me wish it could talk. The Dept. of Justice was very much involved with espionage during the war years and beyond, aiding in hunting down the escape Nazis as well as involvement in the Nuremberg Trials. The DOJ seal on this knife does date to the time period. The knife was not just a presentation piece but shows honest pocket wear. The blades remain full however with great snap and just minimal shrinkage of the scales.
Did this knife attend the Nuremberg Trials? Did it chase Nazis in Argentina? Did it peel an apple while waiting for a contact at Checkpoint Charlie? Or does it hide a more shameful past from the Japanese internment camps right here in the US. No matter it's past it sits with honor today with a few other Camillus, Case, and Remingtons of that era. And it does get to spend a day in my pocket when I occasionally get the whim to carry a piece of history. Every time I carry it tho I wish it could tell me of it's past.
