If only every state could be like IL (news article link)

I've posted this quote in a thread on Great film lines, but it seems equally appropriate here.

From Death Wish: "But this is gun country. Can't even own a handgun in New York City. Out here I hardly know a man who doesn't own one. And I'll tell you something, unlike your city, we can walk our streets and through our parks at night and feel safe. Muggers operatin' out here they just plain get their asses blown off." - Ames Jainchill

Surprisingly most (liberals) are very well educated. I supposed their problem is that they are either blinded by ideology or simply want social control, even at the cost of innocent life. I just do not understand how they can stand up and applaud the effects of gun control on crime when no city or state that has especially strict gun control has a low crime rate compared to all other more 2nd amendment friendly states.

As someone who has spent a chunk of my life in higher education (2 BAs, 2BSs, 2 MAs) I'll be the first to say that well-educated and intelligent do not equate to common sense. Some of the technically brightest folks I know have the least common sense.

I realize that things such as economic situation, drug use and mental discrepancies, and population size can also contribute to the crime level. But, it must me agreed that there is a negative correlation between gun ownership and crime.

To some extent, but Kentucky, like many rural states, is in the middle of a meth epidemic, and we still have lower crime rates in our cities than other cities of comparable size, at least in part because Kentucky is carry-friendly.

I believe that legal gun ownership reduces crime for several reasons. Gun owners have an effective means of defense, even if partially handicapped. Gun owners tend to be more law abiding because they are worried about loosing their gun rights. Guns also act as a psychological deterrent to most would be criminals. Criminal psychology is much like a predatory animal, they prefer a weaker target.

+1. The only exception I can think of is crimes of passion; they are intensely personal.

I think it is absolutely terrible that they are having to consider using the national guard to reclaim the streets. I don't think the crime would be half as bad if citizens could conceal carry.

I'm torn here. I don't wish any ill-fortune on anyone, even people I feel are asking for it. Still, sometimes an individual or group demands something awful, and some ugly little black corner of me thinks "I hope you get what you're asking for..." If the NG went in unarmed, it would only be a matter of time until they were the targets of gunfire. If they went in armed, there would be a body count, possibly including innocents. Even a badguy body count is unacceptable to some folks.

It would be interesting to watch (since I'm not in the middle of that mess.)
