If only one more AR, which one?

I hope and pray that there will be no renewed assault weapon ban and I am actively opposing the renewal. However if there was to be another I want to buy a second AR within the next year or so. I will be stuck in law school for starting next fall for 3 to 4 years and will have a limited budget. I already have a 16" M4rgery by Doublestar and want to pick up a different style AR.

My Doublestar was either an A2 or A3 at one time, but the previous owner slapped on a beat up old A1 upper reciever before selling it (still has the 1in9 twist barrel with A2 front sight). I plan to add an A3 flattop to it sometime soon with a detachable carry handle. In the future this will be my "tacticool" AR, and I will add the flashlight, Aimpoint, rails, or whatever tickles my fancy.

If I could have only one AR to fit a different niche, what would you pick from the following.

1. Dissipator: This is my favorite choice, and it would be my no frills rifle. I like the idea of a fixed A2 upper reciever and the longer sight radius of a 20", but the manueverability of a 16".

2. 18": This rifle would give me increased accuracy for "long distance calling" while still maintaining some of the manueverability compared to the 20". I'd get a flattop and carry handle for now and latter equip it with a scope and flip down sights, or the Aimpoint Comp and Magnifier combo, or an ACOG.

3. 20": This rifle would serve as either a competition rifle (like a National Match variant) or a long range precision rifle. Furniture would change depending upon its role so it would also be a flattop with the carry handle initially.

Anyway thanks for in advance for chiming in.

An SBR is on the wishlist, but I'm on a budget and the $200 and tax stamp hassle just isn't feasible at the moment. Also I want to stick with .223.

Get the flat top receiver on the current rifle first. You already have a 16" AR. I'd look at the 18" or 20" A3 next.

If that's the case then why not just buy 2 or 3 lowers for the same money?

I'd wait for 2008 to come and a few new rifles to hit the market. AR prices should come down when that happens. Besides, one thing I can guarantee about law school is that your budget is only as limited as the debt you want to incur. People will line up around the block to loan you more money than you need. I know a couple of law students who succumbed to that allure and now have a nice collection of NFA weapons.

Oh good point Bartholomew. If I could get an extra $5000 loan one semester I could knock all three off my wishlist.

Buying cheap doesn't mean buying on a budget. Buying one of the best is buying smart.

For an AR that will stay with you a lifetime, go with a quality piece such as the Bushmaster as a brand, and then for practicality, I'd suggest their Dissipator which gives you the shortest non-SBR barrel length of 16", but the same sight radius of a 20".
Also, get it as a flat top but with the sighted carry handle so you have lot's of options in the future.

The only "tweaking" you might want to do later after you get it is to change out the trigger for a White Oak Precision.
I know you could buy "cheaper", but the above rifle will seem very inexpensive to you 5, 10, or 20 years later when it's still a prized possession waiting for you in a safe place.
