If the AR-15 is banned, will uppers/parts still be made and sold?

I currently have an AR stripped lower and a lower build kit. However, I do not have the upper. I've been waiting for my favorite 20" upper to come back into stock (fat chance now). While I'm hoping and lobbying for no additional gun laws, I'm wondering if the sale of new ARs becomes illegal, will there still be uppers and build kits and such? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Nobody has a crystal ball but based on previous laws and what has so far been proposed i don't think you need worry. At least i hope not as i'm sitting on a few as well.

I'm so tired of these pointless "predict the future" questions, if I knew the future don't you think I would have won the Lotto already? Seriously, nobody knows if there will even be an AWB let alone what any sort of bill (if written) would entail.

Everyone forgets the last AWB was passed with dem control of house and senate. The GOP has a 50 seat advantage in the house. 25 GOP congressman would have to flip to pass a ban.

The landscape is also much diffferent than 1994. Today the AR-15 is the most common rifle possesed by the U.S. citizen. I think it should pass the Supreme Court's "common use" test as outlined in Heller.

In 1994 ownership of the AR-15 seemed to be almost an anamoly with a small audience with limited options. Today, there are many, many manufacturers, parts suppliers and people shooting sporting events with them as well as hunting, etc.

Perhaps, but I haven't forgotten that the GOP nominated Romney and the American electorate voted for Obama. These are new times we live in. I take nothing for granted and I, for one, am keeping my Senators' and Representative's feet to the fire on this.

As everyone should. We can win this. It always looks bad at first. Make your voices heard. Take some of the money you would have spent on mags, ammo, or guns, and make a donation to a pro gun organization or politician looking for re-election in 2014.

PLodder: You do bring up a good point. The GOP is very weak at the top. I don't think we are in new times, but that weak leadership needs to change. The House GOP other than the leadership is a different animal. They are pissed at the current administration and Dem leadership. I don't see the house GOP rank and file voting for ban. Midterms mostly go conservative. It aint over.

I think it would be hard to stop parts mfg, but if they ban the gun period no grandfathering turn in your guns or become felons then yes parts will not be made.

The previous AWB was more a collection of features than a ban on AR-15's specifically. No bayo lugs, flash hiders, pistol grips etc. I suspect if an upper has any 'evil' features, they won't be legal.

All good points. Keep in mind your receiver IS your AR. Even if ARs are banned, barrels,BCGs, stocks etc. would be legal. Owning every single part excepting the receiver means you don't own an AR.

Thanks, OP, for the question... I'm in a similar boat and asked a couple posters I respected an almost identical question via PM. I started with a PM mainly because I wasn't sure whether or not posting a thread would contribute even more to all the crazy speculation that's happening here.

For what it's worth: I'm trying to finish two 'tactical carbine' builds and tweak out my existing 'precision' AR. My plan is to, as soon as possible, purchase the lower parts kits I want (with either MOE or CTR collapsible stocks) as soon as I can reasonably do it. My hope is that I can do that well before any legislation really starts to get wings. Then, I can have the lowers, which are the rifle after all, completed.

I'm suspecting that uppers will continue to be available (at least for a little while) since they are not technically a firearm. If an eventual ban does take away a bayonette lug or flash hider from my eventual uppers, I can live with that.

Actually, it did ban AR-15s specifically. Fortunately, only Colt makes the AR-15. Everyone else just makes an AR.
