If there's a more concealable 9mm with a more user friendly grip than the Kahr CW9...

I have learned to use the Kahr PM-9 with proficiency. The grip is small but sufficient for the caliber. I can easilly put 7 shots into a 3 inch circle at 7 to 10 yards with my PM-9.

"I also like the idea floated by many to use a piece of inner tube to mitigate the aggressive checkering of the back of the grip on the CW9"

I'm not sure who the "many" are but I mentioned it in post #8 and was horrified by the suggestions to file or sand the grip/frame.
Chopping up a gun for comfort is way down on my list of solutions of what to try with the bike inner tube being the first, cheapest/easyest thing to try.

I will confess to taking a file to the slide on a Iver Johnson TP22 after it cut open the knuckle on my thumb...the 2nd time though:uhoh:.

Tilos, thanks for the inner tube idea. You're correct, you were the one who mentioned that.

Rick, I will have to look into this Qwik Grip - if it's flat I think I'll like it. I don't want to add width to this and defeat the purpose of the very thin dimension out of the box.

To everyone: Reliability being paramount, who carries a CW series Kahr for EDC, which assumes you've had no reliability/feeding issues with you JHP ammo of choice after many rounds down range?

I carry my CW9 alot, and have never had a problem with any ammo! I carry +P 124gr Gold Dots in mine, and I can shoot it acurately and fast, great gun!

BTW Trijicon night sights are only $80 for the CW series, and really compliment an already sweet CC peice.

bdb, thanks for that information.

I am definitely going to add trijicons.

What's interesting is that the one type of ammo I hear more complaints about feeding issues with the PM9, P9 and CW9 is Speer Gold Dots IN 124 grain, which happens to be one of my favorite JHP ammunition types.

I am now hopeful since yours feeds that particular type well!

Back in the late 70's we at the AFPPD (Australian Federal Police Plainclothes Divison) were offered a selection of handguns for concealed carry use.

Ahh, back in the days when citizens had the option also?

No offense dave - I just thought you may have had some experience with the sanding advice you gave. You know like what worked good for you and so forth? Nevermind

Let's start over, then.

The last think that needed dehorning was a sub2000 from Kel Tec, I ended up using the back of a knife to soften edges and some extremely fine sandpaper to soften the checkering. I got a bit overly aggressive removing some molding flash on the fore-end, I got frustrated and shaved off the annoying edge where the halves meet. That's the only spot you can tell I did anything, otherwise a wipedown made all my tool marks go away.

Prior to that I did some reduction on MrsBFD's Taurus PT111, it showed a bit, but just as a grey area on a black frame ... nothing that an application of dye or some honest wear wouldn't hide. It made a difference in her opinion of the gun for range time, and when she decided to trade up to an XD the recipient of the gun didn't have any complaints about the modification.

If you wanted to reduce checkering on something the best way to ID the problem spots is to shoot it and see where it is rough, then cautiously round edges a bit at a time. Remember that the checkering is there for you to utilize in a panic with sweaty (bloody?) hands, not for comfort at the range. You'll have to determine your own compromise point, based on the actual defensive role of the weapon compared to the time it spends as a range toy.

Adding a grip sleeve makes the gun bigger, which may not be a winning option for a concealment gun.
Adding rubber may make a gun a better range toy, but will it help with a wet hand? Go try it out, take a water-soaked cloth and an oil-soaked cloth to the range and see if your inner tube helps you grip that compared to checkering ... I suspect that it won't unless you're using the handle materials used on kitchen tools or something.

But the best option for making your defensive guns ergonomic is to buy a gun that fits your hand in the first place, closely followed by accept that a handgun is a compromise. Not every defensive gun makes a great range toy, not every ultra-comfortable customized match gun has any utility for defense.
If the gun fits, buy it, make it work for you, and don't worry about looks or resale value.

JQP:
I've only had feed issues from a full mag when I chamber a round, remove the mag and top it off.
When I do that the 2nd shot (1st out of the full mag) sometimes misfeeds.
Actually twice, out of a total of 10 times with "topping off".

When I don't "top it off" it's 100% reliable.

And fyi:
An ultra light inner tube is only .020" thick X2 adds less than and 1/16 of an inch to a grip's size, and my guns are shot in central Florida.
In the 100 degree heat and 90% humidity, I don't need to bring water to the range to test slippage of a wet grip.
I don't "suspect it will slip"...because I know it will not.

Having had a CW9, and currently having a PM9, IMO the PM is a far superior gun. The PM is amazingly accurate, softer shooting, and can actually disappear in a pocket.

For me, the CW series is about like the G26/27. They are both tweeners. Too small to be big, and too big to be small. :D

9mmepiphany - I am encouraged that yours eats that type and weight without nary an issue, as those are my favs.

Tilos - That sorta' sucks if it's typical of the breed, because I do like to carry mine with one in the pipe and a full magazine.

JQP:
It could have been the ammo...Walleyworld Remington 115 HP.
Cheapest HP I could find but I don't carry it for that feed issue.
Carrying FMJ for now, as I'm 3000 miles from home and have to pay for range time to test function of ammo here.

bigfatdave:
The checkering prints through the "glock sock":what:
What's not to like:D

Here's a pic of a sleeved PM9

Something to look at,(bfd) note the print through checkering.
It's actually a pic of a modified 7rd base plate on a 6 rd mag to fill the mag gap:
