If you could bulid your own hd gun no restrictions what would it be?

Home defense? I'd be happy with just a couple of mods to the M1 Carbine I already have, and a real good way to store it in a secure yet handy manner. I just feel the .30 carbine is already the perfect spook chaser for the house.

I would still use my Glock 19 with a flashlight/laser combo on the rail.

I'm not really interested in full auto or a rifle for HD, just due to my concern over the travel of each round and the fact that i have neighbors right next to me (suburban life).

However, seeing as how IL doesn't allow silencers to be bought, ideally I'd have a silencer on it. I've fired my guns outside without cans to at least get an idea of what the blast would be like. My ears rang. I can't imagine how loud it would be indoors, with walls right near me, not to mention how loud it would be for my wife and kid.

It's VERY loud, especially with rifle rounds. There was a huge difference in doing handgun training at a static outdoor range and inside a "shoot house" for me. Walls that are only a few feet away from you and construction absolutely NOT designed to absorb or deflect sound makes it very deafening. Even with hearing protection, you can feel muzzle blast reverb off the surfaces.

It's the reason I believe a suppressor should be a serious consideration in a home defense firearm if you have other family members, room mates, or friends that live with you for the sake of communication during or after the situation. Unfortunately state laws don't allow that option for everyone. I haven't taken a suppressed rifle with supersonic ammo indoors but it can safely be shot outdoors without ears, at least for a short while. It's still loud and it takes a mag or two for your ears to ring but that's better than blowing out your hearing on the first round.

I feel a SBR or SBS should also be a serious consideration because it makes maneuverability in a home practical, buy my state doesn't allow that option. Unfortunately state laws don't allow that option for everyone...because SBRs are the choice weapon of criminals and gang members...who can modify existing guns for free without a tax stamp, yet prefer to carry handguns.

For the longest time, I've had a 870 as my HD weapon and I'm still comfortable with using it for barricading. It's not quite as handy trying to clear a house though with narrow halls and closely-spaced doors. I don't really want to clear my own home though, if avoidable. Doing it solo to control all real estate is painstakingly slow. There is a reason clearing a home is a team game when the pros do it.

It's not only slow, it's ridiculously dangerous. Even for a team of pros.

For defense inside the home, I think a handgun has some real advantages. If you have kids, for example, you might want to have a hand free. It's hard to operate an AR or shotgun one-handed. In that scenario, my choice would be a suppressed .45-caliber handgun. Probably an HK, but a Glock would work too.

I would really just like to add a Streamlight TLR-1 (the 300 leumen version) to my PPQ, and get a custom holster to carry it in without having to remove the light.

Ultimate homestead defense? Colt 6920, Gemtech Halo suppressor, Magpul forend, crimson trace vertical foregrip w/light & laser, remove carry handle, mount an Aimpoint (co-witness). Back that up with my PPQ, as above, but wearing the 17rd mags.

In my pondering of hypothetical end-of-days scenarios, I still tend to think that shots outside of 300 yards are too far from reality to mess with, given that I live in the Portland, OR area. If I lived in a place with fewer elevation variations, more common long sight lines, etc... I'd be looking at a 308 of some sort.

Absolutely! I'm not sure how many folks who express a desire to clear their home have actually done structure clearing, properly, under professional instruction. It's not so "high speed low drag cool" once you get tagged in the face a few dozen times by simunitions. It's a last resort for me if family members aren't gathered already. Bunkering down with good boomsticks is the best position to be in, and if I'm barricaded, I want something with more punch than a handgun since you're essentially cornered.

"A phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range."

Hey, Pal...just what ya' see on the wall.

What I have is fine, other than a couple modifications I'd like to do. Modifications would include adding folding night sights on a couple lever rifles, inconspicous scope bases on the barrels (like for Ruger rings or some other small base rings so they aren't so profoundly ugly, like weaver/picatinny bases are, when no optics are on), and cutting the Browning 92 to 16" for easy carry when a short range carbine would be appropriate. A scoped bolt gun is usualy by the front door for things that arent at porch/yard distance.

Critters are more of a realistic issue than people where I am. The single action Ruger 45 or Smith 44 will do anything I need for short guns. I generally have one on when outside.
