upon reading more up on the 458, it appears to be a fast 45. that after 150 yds, the round really drops like a rock, that it really dies out in the energy dept.
I'll take the 30.06 thanks.

Your post asks an entirely different question from the title. The title asks .458 soccom or garand. Your post asks .458 soccom or .50 beowulf.

NO he simply explained why he didn't want a .50 Beowulf, potential .50 cal ban. When he said which would you choose between the two he was referring to the .458 and the Garand. I'm in the camp that sees them as two very different rifles. If you want a true big bore then get the SOCOM. IF you want something more versatile and practical get the Garand.

Whenever someone asks one of these what should I get threads I turn to the want vs need rule.

If you have a particular well defined "need" it is pretty easy to answer.

Service rifle match-you "need" a Garand

Hordes of wild pigs in a swamp 50 yards away , you "need a 485socm.

If you want something just for fun blasting it is a want question and depends if ---you care about ammo cost, you like kick ass recoil, ammo availibility?
historical coolness and a bunch of other stuff . Personal preference actually.

Most folks for one of the above reasons would chose a Garand (or several) before they would go for the 458 socom but either has a ton of fun factor going for it

If for a sporting purpose, the big boolit semi I would pick would be a Browning BAR in .338 Winchester Magnum. I would almost bet it is cheaper to shoot than the .458 SOCOM or the .50 Beowulf.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Don't know how much help I am but I do own a garand and nobody is taking my Beowulf away!
