If you had $300 to spend........

What to buy, if I only had $300 to spend?

Assuming I didn't have a deer rifle... I'd get a Marlin 336. Or better, get a second-hand 336, then buy a 4x Nikon scope.... and I'm right at 300, and set for venison.

I wouldn't have suggested it before I owned one, but a good surplus Mauser and a boat load of ammo is a lot of fun.

(On the other hand, I had a similar quandary a week or so ago, I saved my pennies and bought what a I really wanted. If you already know what you want, don't settle for less.)

i just got this rifle used a bout 2 weeks ago for $300.00 and i put the simmons pro hunter scope on it the other day i havent had a chance to zero it in yet though it a stainless ruger m77 243win.

2nd for what spoony said, a Stevens in 308...my 223 stevens is the perfect hunting gun accurate enough, light and you can switch calibers if you like.

Either a Kel-Tec Sub2000 w/Glock 17 grip or an AK variant. It depends what you want it for.

$300 Will get you an M38 or M44 and an SKS. With some careful shopping you could even end up with a little bit of ammo for both.

Then you have a bolt action, and a semi-auto. And both are fun as heck!

Has anyone even bothered to ask what you are looking for? Is it target, in the woods shooting at anything that moves, big game hunting (for what?), military history or a combination of the above.

Target - 10/22 : You can spend all day at the range for $20
Small Game - 10/22 : Why would you need anything bigger?
Big Game - Something in a .30-06
Military History - Always wanted a .30 M1 Carbine
Combo - MN 91/30 : Cheap ammo, fun at the range, will take down big game and its cheap milsurp.

Just spent exactly that!

Just paid 300.00 for a Swede M38 off Gunbroker that is arriving tomorrow. Then turned around and bought an 1895 Chilean Carbine in 7X57 off Auction Arms for 300.00. (I've got several early Mauser Carbines and this Chilean shoots a round I handload)

If I didn't already have a few K31s, I would have bought a walnut stocked version of that!

It's a nice problem. Lots of interesting rifles out there. Collect them all!

I'm currently learning about WWII Jap rifles. I'm sure I will end up with one. They seem to be real bargains and the 6.5 M38 rifle will load the same slug as the Swede.

Still 20 doe tags to shoot, so I can always buy an old military arm with the excuse: I might use this to shoot a doe!

I'd narrow it down to one of the following options:

1. Two Yugo SKS's in very good-excellent condition; or

2. Marlin 336 (especially if I could find a "youth" model or a Spikehorn for that price--it'd be the perfect "truck gun")

3. H&R Handi Rifle Superlight Youth model in .243, and put a decent scope on it. At 33" long and weighing in at 5.3 lbs, This would be a super handy varmint/light deer/take anywhere truck gun. Plus in a few years when my son is old enough to hunt, this would be perfect. I'd buy it "for the children". :)

Based on my current collection, I'd probably go with #3, since I already have SKS's, a 30-30, bolt actions, shotguns, AK, AR, pistols, etc. I don't have a single shot or a .243 represented yet.

Tough call between a Marlin 30/30 or 35 and a Mossberg ATR in .270 or '06.

Hold the phone I just remembered a nice in-line I wanted ...
