If you own a 22 lr and a 223 would you get a 22 magnum?

Own all three. I have countless .22's, a pile of .223's and one .22 mag conversion cylinder for a super single six .22 revolver. Shot less that 50 rounds of .22 mag in my life. The round just doesn't do anything for me.

Hate to burst your bubble MCgunner, in Texas you can only hunt turkey with shotgun only.
Absolutely WRONG !!

FWIW, The Eastern Turkey experiment (shotguns only) has not proved to be very successful..There are places in East Texas where ANY turkey is fair game, regardless of season. The great majority of turkeys (Rio Grande's) in Texas are taken with a rifle..

WMA's require rimfire for hunting hogs :confused:

22 mag is better than .22LR.

You can also use shotguns but I don't wanna get that close.

WMA's require rimfire for hunting hogs
Only during times on "small game" hunts. Hogs on Alabama WMAs may be shot with any gun or bow legal for the game in season. Deer and turkey season does not overlap the small game season on WMAs so any hog killed during small game season can only be shot with whatever is legal for small game.

In that quandary, I think I'd take my old double barrel 12 gauge. That thing shoots like a rifle with slugs, though you pay for it in bruised anatomical structures about the upper body. Load one barrel with a slug, one with 6 shot, go squirrel hunting with hogs in mind. :D Or, if I did it a whole lot, I might be looking for a Savage 24V.

Read the WMA regs on the second page for squirrels and then think about editing your post, since you're advocating illegal hunting methods within the context of this conversation.

To whit: "Squirrel & Rabbit & Crow: Shotguns using No. 4 shot or smaller, .22 caliber or smaller rimfire firearms, and muzzle loading rifles .40 caliber or smaller, or rifles operated by air."

You have it backwards: You can hunt and shoot hogs on AL WMAs with any gun/firearm/ammo legal for the hunting season currently in session - in other shoot them with whatever is legal at that time.

During deer season = Deer guns (+ special feral swine hunt)
During squirrel season: squirrel guns
During turkey season: turkey guns

And so forth.

Deer season + special 2 week feral swine hunt = about 3 weeks

Squirrel season = Oct - Feb. = 5 months

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I dont know about Hawg or Turkey shoots, but when I can make a shot within 2" at a 100 I am gonna keep my 77/22. There isnt anything I need to shoot that my favorite rifle and cartridge cant take care of. Its dropped more Yotes and put more food in the pot then any other rifle I own.

I've got all three, but the magnum makes having a .22LR a little superfluous.

I still need a .22 hornet, .221 fire ball and a .222 to fill the big gap between the .22 magnum and .223.

I like/use the 22mag for the following:

1) Varmints beyond 50 yards or so.

2) Fall Turkey where its legal to use rimfire here in PA. Shotguns only in spring.

3) Varmint/Predator in semi-populated areas where the noise/range of the 22 centerfire is undesirable.

I have 22mag in a Marlin 925 rifle and Ruger Single Six revolver.

I prefer 22lr for shorter range varmints, squirrels, rabbits and target shooting/plinking.

No. .22 Mag ammo is expensive. If its a bolt gun in .223, I'd reload and just download the rounds if you want. Great bullet selection in .223 also.

GA has the same firearms rules as AL for WMA on hogs, except the ML has to be .44 IIRC. The 22 Mag is very popular for hogs here. The best shot is said to be half way between the eye and ear.

I take it it's illegal to use a shotgun on squirrel if one barrel has a slug in it for hogs? Oh, well, I really don't give a flyin' damn about Alabama and prefer to read up on Texas law. The folks are nicer here.

So bite me, edit it yourself. Ain't got time for rude remarks from rude people.

22mag is a great weapon... for calling in fox & coyote with zero pelt damage. 223 abit much at 30 feet, I know, ive blown holes in alot varmints at close range with 222, 223, 22-250. If yer not in a rush & under 125 yds....22mag will drop them clean. Also good for head-shots at 75 yards on rabbit, etc As a 22 just doesnt cut it. With a good scope on a 22mag you can enjoy one shot kills twice the range of a standard 22.

Which 22 mag rounds are you using for fox and coyote?

My .22mag snubby was fun to shoot (except for the ONE round I fired without ear protection). Sold it for a loss after 1000 rounds or so. Not that accurate, a little expensive, and it quickly got hot enough to make removing the spent brass difficult.

MS6852.......HP fastest ones I can find. In AK I also carry my 300 win. as you never know what will come running in....gulp

They're loud, but .357s are louder. I have a NAA Black Widow that shoots under 4" at 25 yards from the bench. I don't use it for hog hunting, though. :D

I say go for it. Pretty impressive balistics from the newer .22 mag offerings. As for the "not accurate" comment above, not so. I have a cheap Rossi break action that'll shoot into a single hole at 50 yd's and will hold at about 1.5" at 100yds-with the lowsy trigger and cheapo scope.

Sounds like alot of 22 cals... y not go for the 17 hmr? My personal favorite rimfire! More accurate than a 22 mag and those little v-max bullets are devastating.

y not go for the 17 hmr?
Why? Because I ALREADY have a .22 mag that I am VERY happy with. I would buy a .17 because I wanted one, NOT because it could do a better job.
More accurate than a 22 mag
Five rounds of .22 mag,40grn Maxi-mag into 1 hole at 75-100 yards is accurate enough for me.
those little v-max bullets are devastating.
YES they are! So are 40grn,Maxi-mags!

Do you know if the 17 hmr will bring a coyote or a fox down like the 22 magnum does?

I HAVE ALL 3. and more then a few in 22lr

main reason i picked up a 22mag was i wound up with 1500 rounds of 22mag so that was a good excuse to get the gun too. had some bad luck with 3 marlin 900 models and was about to right them off, but i picked up a nice 883ss that is a tack driver. think ill keep it at least till i run out of 22mag ammo.
