If you were an LEO in YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD what service weapon would you carry?

Personally, I would carry my XD-9 4" with standard load of mag in the gun & two on the belt, plus a back up revolver, probably something in the S&W X42 flavor. My town isn't huge ( about 73,000) but it's getting bigger, plus we're stuck in between two major cities that have a high amount of crime, and have a pretty big drug problem in this area.

If you can say why you would carry what you chose that would be great.

XD 40 tactical and Taurus PT140 or PT145 (PT 140 for ammo commonality only, prefer .45) used the XD 40 for 3 years out here in the Desert running in very harsh conditions along the AZ Mex border usually on dirt bike or sand rail the .40 is flatter shooting for extended ranges...... even full of fine sand its always functioned never a single failure

Taurus PT 145, excellent backup choice, 10 rounds of .45 ACP in single mag versus 5 rounds of .38 in a J frame S&W, flat profile, no cyl. to get jammed up, same size as revolver but more fire power with a more effective round and easier to control, same grip angle/profile as primary sidearm for more natural transition from one to the other. DAO for safty but still as fast to get into action as a revolver, manual safty if ya want to use it..... multiple restrike capability if needed...

This combination has been very reliable out here and mine do not get pampered....... if your primary reason for carrying is function and reliability its a no brainer

The very same gun I (plan to) carry - HK 45. I personally believe the .45 ACP to be the most versatile handgun round created - allows for rapid follow-up fire, and yet still has great accuracy and terrific stopping power when outfitted with the appropriate ammunition. I hope that last statement doesn't lead to any sort of flame war - just my personal opinion. Other than the round, Heckler and Koch designed a gun that really feels as if it were made for my hand, and I've been shooting great groupings with the gun, and can't really imagine using anything else!

That said, LE is a whole lot more than the gun one carries - 99% of the work they do is controllable through communication and coercion. No need to shoot a perp when you can get it through the criminals' skulls that they have no chance at all, and should just give up!

Would only be caught dead with a Brazilian gun in my hand.

In real life I'd have an Israeli .45 with a 15-round mag capacity or or a Canadian gun that carries as many rounds in smaller package.

Forget them X guns. I'd rather have an Italian job that holds 21 rounds of 38 Super.

In spite of a terrible temptation for a vaquero in .45 LC, i'd probably go with a S&W .357 and lots of range time.

good practice and shot placement trumps magazine capacity.

My 226R 9mm. Only handgun that ive kept out of the many I have had due to being the only one I like to shoot.

If I was going to go with a .45 it would be a 1911 or full size USP.

Well, gee, this question presumes that your department doesn't mandate which particular service pistol you must carry -- most departments/agencies don't give the individual leeway to pick his/her own weapon (yes, there are the more enlighted agencies that allow choice, but they're in a decided minority, and if there is a choice, it's often between pistols of a select two or three makers and models).

I don't work where I live, but I'm forced to carry a German made autoloader (not a SIG) with crappy ergonomics in 9mm. Our only other choice is the compact version of same. Yawn.

Now, if I worked in my own town (pop. 8500), and had my druthers, I'd go with a a 5" Wilson or Ed Brown 1911 most days, maybe some days pack the SIG 226 in .40 S&W (the best compromise between 9mm and .45 with a reasonable magazine capacity in the best-ever platform for the .40) ... depending on my mood. Back up would be a 2" Model 60-7 in .38.

Would only be caught dead with a Brazilian gun in my hand.
No matter what the thread's question is, the bashers always find a way to come out ...

Just a little bit curious, where is this make believe neighborhood and What make believe Law Enforcement Agency that allows you to choose your own Service weapon and Back up weapon..

I am not a LEO, but have been going through the hiring process for the city police. Our local metro PD issues Glock 22 .40 and a BUG G27 .40---Off duty I'd keep my 17rd SA XD9 and the G27 on my ankle or belly-band. To switch it up a little bit I may get an XD9sc so I could use the same magazines if necessary.

Same gun I carried when I was an LEO.

S&W M19, 4" barrel, 357 mag ammo, 158 HP bullet.

It worked then, it will work now.

Option #2 would be a revolver I had made and carried briefly. A 45 ACP S&W N frame, 4" barrel with full moon reloads. 230 grain HP.

Hmmm...let's see.....

I THINK I would probably carry a Glock 22 with two spare mags.

(because that's what my agency issues)

If I had a CHOICE, I'd probably go with the Glock 21SF or a Springfield XD in .45.

....or a Para P14/45.

Alright, I realize that most department's issue weapons, and I am extremely aware that police work is NOT about shooting people, but working with the community.

This is what's called a hypothetical situation, as are quite a few threads and posts. I've never seen a zombie, but lots of people post about them. This is more of an entertainment thread, just a question of curiousity, and maybe some information to be shared, not a super-serious "If your life depended on this" thread.

I was just trying to drum up some conversation about something besides
"9mm vs .45" that people might want to talk about, or share ideas.

Sig 220.

Interesting that there have been a couple of revolvers mentioned. My dad (20+ years in law enforcement) has said for years that if it were his choice he'd still be carrying a 4" 686.
