It's pretty "elemental" around here.

EVERYONE has guns. Even people who in other areas you'd expect to be anti-gun. Teachers, social workers, nurses, etc. Robberies don't tend to go down very well. Why am I taking these modern guns back with me? Who is it that I am going to massacre with my "superior firepower?" Why would I feel good about doing it? Why would I not, instead, simply go back and_while blending in_try to see as many places and people as possible? Is there no better use for a time machine than to become a mass killer?
 
The highest and best use of a time machine can only be determined with reference to the society or culture, however small or circumscribed, which develops the time machine.

But I would agree that utilizing a time machine to satisfy one's homicidal inclinations presumptively is suspect, to say the least.
 
I don't think the OP meant for you to go back simply to kill. I think he meant more along the lines of, if you went back simply to be there and live, and happened to be a part of one of the "old west shootouts" that the movies love to portray. Granted they didn't happen nearly as much as the movies portray, but gun fighting did happen on occasion. The guns you bring back can be used for hunting, protecting your ranch from rustlers, hostile Native American, etc. The premise of the OP isn't just "what would you bring to go back and start slaughtering people". Try to think a little.

Regardless of the intention, this thread is bringing out the worst in some people.

If you want to gun down a bunch of people who can't fight back, at least effectively, there are plenty of options that don't require a time machine. See Viginia Tech.

It really sickens me to read these threads.
 
I am thinking. The guns of the time period were perfectly adequate. People used them quite successfully to do all things you describe.
"Old West Gunfights" were largely quarrels between drunken dirtbags. Seems to me that such things are better handled by avoiding being a drunken dirtbag than by being the only guy on the planet with an assault rifle. You think a little bit. If you have a time machine, why are you trying to scratch out a living as a 19th century rancher?
 
I have to agree with EXPVIDEO on this. Why go back to fight?? You can stay here and do that.

I never took it as a question of "What guns could I most effectively murder people with if I could take them back in time?" Rather, I took it more as an exercise in comparative technology. And, yes, there's an element of roleplaying. "What if I was a TV-style gunfighter with modern weapons in the old west?" It's just another harmless hypothetical that is fun (for some) to think about.

It's just a game. Even if it was possible, I wouldn't go back to the old west at all. Except perhaps to do some careful investing here and there, and will my modern self an enormous fortune. But that's not what the game is about. It's about guns. Specifically, which guns, and why.

I'm not knocking anyone... I just don't think "what caliber for mass murder?" was the purpose of the thread.
 
If I were the type of person who idolized the Old West gunmen, I'd fantasize about beating the best of them on an "equal playing field," not about going back and cutting one down with modern weapons and training (and no doubt sober).

I'll take a Colt 1873 SAA .44 WCF, Winchester Model 1886 .45-90 WCF, Winchester Model 1873 .44WCF, and a rabbit ear SBS shotgun (manufacturer doesn't matter) in 10 ga.

Most importantly give me the brains to stay on the good side of all the "Gunslingers". It doesn't matter how much firepower you're carrying, when you are shot in the back of the head at zero distance.

Tons of mags and ammo that I could hide in some cave or something.
