If you were to make a new bolt-action battle rifle...

the last MAS i handled really surprised me by how well it was thought out...but it just looked wierd

i've actually given this idea more time than it like deserves, but here goes what i like.

A. Enfield #4 Mk-1 action
1. cocks on closing...faster and easier
2. 10 round mag
3. built in stripper clip guide
4. ladder sights
5. don't have to bring it down fromyour shoulder to operate the bolt.

B. chambered in 6.5x55mm
1. why abuse yourself with recoil without improving ballistics
2. if in a new manufactured action, i'd go short and chamber in .260 Rem

C. 20-22" free floated barrel

Enfield sounds good to me.

Didn't the Russians execute anyone with an enfield or .303 rounds during the Russian Afghan war?

Didn't the Russians execute anyone with an enfield or .303 rounds during the Russian Afghan war

that's because the accurate rifle fire from the Afgani's was taking such a toll on morale...it's tough when you con't get suppression fire to work

I've had two guns that started as MAS 36s. One had been sporterized by Golden West back in '49, the other had been rebarrelled during the Italian occupation to take 7.35 Carcano.

Both were remarkably accurate, handy guns. They remind me strongly of modern Ruger products in their appearance, heft, and toughness.

Solid, simple, and effective.

Another vote for either a P14....P17 or Smle design.... would need at least a 10 rd detachable mag...I like the mag cutoff too... long sight radius..great iron sights....lighten it up with a synthetic stock... pattern '07 bayonet......maintenance kit in hollow stock... maybe find a way to bullpup it.... Sorry, just remembered Wood stock dang it......I think I'd like 7.62X51.... oh yeah......make a bunch of 'em NOLO 'cause I want one too..

A K31 is fine when shooting ammo produced to EXACT specs in the relativity surgical environment of the shooting range. But suitable for the trenches they ain't.

clearly, the Swiss disagree :neener:

But, they never really had to test it in the trenches to find out, so you may be right.:D

Call it unorthodox, but I'd make a new bolt-action rifle in .30 caliber an AR-15 Upper Conversion. Basically, a scaled-down UltraMag 50, from Safety Harbor Firearms, but with a few changes...

1. I'd thread the barrel extension to take Savage barrels, and headspace using a Brewer Collar. Regular Savage barrels thread on 1.055x20 TPI. Makes for good aftermarket support. The "battle" barrels for this upper would be chrome lined, medium profile, and threaded for flash hiders. Mine would be for 9/16x24 LH (I'm a FAL guy, what can I say). Target versions could take anything available for a Savage.

2. I'd have the oversize side-feed mag well have adaptors that could take BAR or FAL Mags. Thus, you could change the barrel, and shoot 7.62 NATO or 30-06, or their numerous derivative cartridges.

3. A Mauser-style extractor and bolt face would be nice. Positive extraction and feeding is always something you want when operating under gross motor skills situations.

4. Sights would be anything available for ARs, as the flat-top geometry would be the same height as the AR. Front sight would be one of those bolt-on Yankee Hill fold-down towers, or user's choice.

5. Why an AR upper that doesn't feed from the traditional mag well? So our fellow shooters in non-free states can still use their restricted or single-shot AR lowers, and have a mag-fed defense rifle at their disposal.

6. Combine these features with the familiar ergos of the AR lower, and I think you'd have a winner. Add in the aftermarket triggers available for the AR, and that helps, too.

If I couldn't have this, I'd settle for an AIA No.4 Mk.4 in 7.62 NATO, using M-14 Mags. Battle or Target version, I'll take two of each.

Best,
John Bear Ross

Well i cant see a bolt " battle rifle " nowadays . However were i to want a bolt that could serve in limited rolls it would be chambered to .308/7.62 and would roughly follow Jeff Coopers Scout rifle concept . Light , fairly short with both irons and optics. A changeable mag of at least 10 rounds. I would prefer controlled feed but push feed would not be a deal breaker . In fact the savage scout i own ( other than quality mag cap ) would be close . any of the enfield Ishapore ect appropriately trimmed down in regards to leingth and weight would serve as well . Heck i built my first " psudo scout " off of one .

I'd go with an Enfield No.4 Mk2 chambered in something like 6.8SPC with a 20 round magazine. You could do away with some of the excess wood, or go synthetic and lighten it up quite a bit.

I'd add a rail mount just forward of the bolt for an Aimpoint type device.
