Battle Rifles

MTM you should be a sales rep. because I am just about sold. I wish you had started this thread haha because you defended it as your own.

I think I may have to get my hands on an M1A first, if only I had a grand or two...

oooo the Springfield Armory M1A Scout-Squad definitely speaks to me, though the basic (classic) walnut M1A is never a bad choice

Would love to pick up G3 and Fal variants some day. Gotta be patient though and enjoy shooting what I currently own though. Only been a gun owner for a year, and already got burned buying up too much too quickly during the Obama Panic. Didn't even realize prices were inflated by The Panic until months later. :fire:

Mine would have to be the M1 Garand, but I would love to know if anyone knows where I can find reasonable surplus ammo for mine.

Mossy...Normally I would say CMP..however they have been having supply issues. I do have some for sale if you would like to pm me. Hornady Garand ammo is about $1.25 per cartridge

if your going to get a Garand, look for a .308 converted one. The 30-06 military stuff is more expensive. I've got an M1 Garand Pre-war Springfield S/N 175,xxx. Great rifle in superb condition. Got it for $1100, only thing I regret is not getting one in 308.

FAL all the way. Good ergos, reliable as the day is long, adjustable gas system, and a good cartridge. Not to mention it's fun to shoot.

FAL. Nothing less than the best.

If we had gotten the T48 in the British .280 or Pederson .276 our troops would probably still be carrying it today. But NIH...

I believe in the major caliber, longer-range concept of the battle rifle, myself. Perhaps to make things clearer, the term Main Battle Rifle is better? I have seen this term in general use. A Main Battle Rifle is not so dependent on support weapons. Maybe putting the word "Classic" up front will make it clearer?

A cartridge such as the .308/7.62 NATO will do some things a .223/5.56 cannot. I am not talking about punching holes in paper. The .223, with heavy bullets, from the AR platform, has largely taken over the paper-punching war.

To be clear, I am not being critical of modern fighting carbines. The Sturmgewehr was a GREAT idea, and its conceptual descendants, such as the AK and AR, are very valid and important weapons, too. I really do like my AR15 HBAR.

I briefly owned a Garand. I was offered a great deal, and instead of passing on it, bit the financial bullet, and bought it. But, I was not prosperous then, and it soon had to go to another home. That brief time with that Garand, however, taught me to appreciate the rifle of my father's Army service time. I will eventually own another, Lord willin'.

Right now, I am looking over some Finnish 39s and Swiss K31s.

I work part-time for a company that can special-order PTR-91 and SA, Inc rifles for me, with an employee discount, or as a ten-month layaway. (not both) That has me thinking.

FWIW, I already use .308 in several Browning BLRs. I won't pretend that a BLR is as rugged as a Battle Rifle, but it has given me a bit of experience slinging .308s downrange.

ARs, SKSs, and AKs are not battle rifles. They are carbines. M1 Garand, M14, Lee-Enfeild no.4, Arisaka Type 99, and Mosin Nagant 91/30 are battle rifles. These are long rifles. Mosin Nagant M44, M38, and 91/59 are carbines also. So is Steyer M95, M38 Carcano, and Mauser K98. Carbines come in different calibers. What makes it a carbine is barrel length (around 18" or less) and over all length. This is what defines carbines by different militaries. I own all the above except the AR and M14. My favorite battle rifle, which militaries call just rifle, is the M1 Garand. My favorite carbine is the Mosin Nagant M44. I know AKs and SKSs hold more rounds and are semi-auto. But I like the somewhat heavy recoil, loud sound, and fire out of the muzzle of a short high power rifle, especially at night.

Not to be rendundant, but I love my Garand all over again today. Sitting at a bench, no rest just a sling, that thing hit a full clip (8) of clays on the 100-yd berm. Perhaps the most satisfying moment shooting targets I've had yet. Plinker's delight! I'll attach a pic...

That said, of what I don't have I want an FN FAL the most, an FN 49 second (ironic, huh?). I chose to go Saiga 308 Ver.21 for my first 308. A close third is the M1A: really wish I could afford one (or have someone teleport me an M14!).

Really like my SKS (an old school yugo in great shape). That thing really deserves a peep sight...

I could see rumbling with my Saiga 308 if it came to it. Garand would take a beating better.

HorseSoldier: "Und now vee Unpimp zee Auto, er...dein Gewehr (your Rifle)":(.

iamkris' photos of his huge, beautiful selection should be banned from the Internut.
This is teasing in the most provocative, public manner, sort of like letting long-legged 18 year-old girls (blondes, redheads) wear short, tight pants and tops in the summertime. These photos must be 'strengstens verboten'.

All of my battle rifles are favorites:
SKS, MN 44, Lee-Enfield #4, both #5s, and now my first Mauser (48A)-won't be a solo Mauser.
Will later buy a Garand.
