OK, I'm a little unclear in reading the texts, so I thought I'd ask for some insight from current residents..

A quick background.. Born and lived in Springfield for a number of years, family moved
around the country, back to Chatham for 2 years and then off to college in Peoria..
San Diego for a couple of decades and back to St. Louis in the 90's.. :scrutiny:

I was adopted at birth and after WAY  too many years of research, after my
adoptive parents died, I finally found both my birth mother's and biological father's
families... (Mom's alive, Dad's not..) I have more cousins than I can count!! :what:

Anyway, thinking about moving the family back to IL (Central, Sangamon County or the
ring of counties around it.. Anybody know of a farm for sale??) so the kids and grandkids
can know their cousins.... (My adopted family doesn't have ANY!)

Question I have is.... What parts of my collection can I bring and are there any special
things I have to do? (Other than getting my FOID before bringing it in-state :fire:) If I
understand correctly NFA items (eg. full-auto) aren't allowed and would need to be resold
(storage is an iffy proposition).. (I don't own any at the moment, but I've been dickering privately for one..)
I can keep a few things in my father-in-law's safe here in NW Arkansas, but...
Also, I think C&R items are clear, but anyone know of anything I
should watch for in that category, too??

Many thanks in advance for enlightenment.. :)
Steve

You are right about the FOID and NFA firearms, no problems with non-NFA C&Rs, otherwise, as long as you stay out of Crook County, you are good to go.

You can't bring non-NFA items with when you move (No full auto or funky ammo allowed in Illinois). Nothing else special about Illinois, unless your going to live in Chicago/Cook County, which it sounds like you're not. Just apply for your FOID ASAP after you get here (you might even be able to do it before you move, there's no proof of residency (show a utility bill or other non-sense) required when you submit the form.

Downstate is very gun friendly. (Downstate = South of I-80, West of Rte 47).

Here's a link to the Illinois State Police Firearms website: http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/ You can get the FOID application, and read through all the relevant parts of the Illinois Code regarding firearms. Make sure you check the Municipal Ordinances section to make sure your town doesn't have some funky rules. I live in Wheaton and the municpal firearm ordinances are somewhat benign. (Dealers need a $2 business licence from the city and the cops can check your bound book anytime.)

I did not see any towns downstate with ordinances other then Carbondale and that's way south from where you're looking to move to.

If you like hunting, especially deer, you've come to the right state. I've got a cousin in Springfield.

I would think twice before a permanent move to IL. I would recommend Indiana if you want to be closer. Supposedly lower taxes, possibility of concealed carry permit, etc.

Without diving into politics too deeply, a special session of the state legislature was called last fall to try and ban magazines with capacity over 10 rounds.

it and other restrictive legislation failed because there are still enough of us here (in IL) willing to fight them.
We always welcome another ally.

No Class III, which you know about. If I had one, it would go in a box off property and never be mentioned. No CCW. No "Dragon's Breath" incendiary type ammo.

Outside of Mordor-by-the-Lake and it's surrounding vassals, nothing else I'm aware of in the way of onerous restrictions. No approved gun list, no magazine capacity limit, no one-gun-a-month limit. Not that the usual suspect don't keep trying. <spit!>.

**** about your guns until you get your FOID. Any license place can handle the paperwork for you.

Scout:

I live in/near Carbondale IL, could you post a link to the regulations you speak of? I have heard a few other people tell me there are some strange gun laws here, but I cannot find anything other than the standard "no discharge of firearm within city limits" type stuff.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Just apply for your FOID ASAP after you get here (you might even be able to do it before you move, there's no proof of residency (show a utility bill or other non-sense) required when you submit the form.
You have to give them your DL number, so you have to get that first.

huff.jeremy,

Here's the ISP's Firearms Website with all the state laws:
http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/

Here's the Carbondale Revised Code
http://www.isp.state.il.us/docs/ordinances/carbonda.pdf

Take a look at 14-4-5 A. (4)

Unless it is just poorly written, it basically states that you can't transport firearms in a vehicle even if your following the Wildlife code (Unloaded, fully encased and you have a valid FOID). I have friends in Herren and Murphysboro. I always stop in to see them when I'm down deer hunting, but I always drive around Carbondale since I have my shotguns with me, just in case.

They just use that so that they can pull up your DL photo to use on the FOID. Neither of my kids (6 and 10 years old) had DL's when they got their FOID's.
The DL thing only applies if you are 18 or over. Look closely at the application.
