Illegal Aliens in Houses With Guns??

Profiling and xenophobia are both survival traits.

And let's not confuse "prejudice" and "postjudice," eh?

And I miss the parks around Denver.

Tecumseh, happy to elaborate. I made a joke. It was not a good joke and perhaps it was even a bad joke, but I thought its humor was immediately recognizable and might help channel the discussion away from expression of generalized hostility to a directions that might be more useful in the context of the original post.

Part of the original poster's point, I think, was that he was uncomfortable having workers in his home with whom he could not communicate. It's an interesting point.

I want to cover my butt legally, but I would also like to have a legal reason to keep my landlord from allowing them access to my home.

Your state should have a residential landlord tenant act in place. Look it up on line. In there, you will likely find that the landlord must give you 24 hours notice prior to entry. Sometimes more. There may also be provisions in your lease if you have one.

To prevent this, I suggest moving to someplace different. Or you can just sue the landlord. Your choice. As far as the workers, if they were legal I'm the queen of England in my damned undies. But there's bo diddly you can do about it unless you end up suing the landlord and can get discovery of his tax records.

But my advice is to move out. That's the big advantage of renting. If the landlord is a clown, you can leave. I prefer moving to places where they don't run credit checks on you and never verify your stated identity. One of my favorite places ever was a residential motel, actually. They totally left me alone as long as I paid. I could have been cooking meth in there and they never would have known. Oddly fewer people bugged me in there than bugged me when I lived way out in the sticks off grid. You'd think people would respect no trespassing signs when backed by attack dogs and a huge guy with a rifle, but you'd be wrong. All kinds of people were looking to win a Darwin out there. The next time I go off grid, it will be remote with trail access only.

Robert Hairless: Perhaps it is the fact that my new goal is to stay solemn as a judge I did not see the humor in the joke.

JLStorm: I still would like to know how you knew they were illegal aliens? Is it because they were unable to speak English? I know quite a bit of people who do not speak English, are they illegals? My dad had to learn it when he came here from Croatia and my mother did the same when she came from Mexico. Before they learned English were they illegals?

worrying about their immigration status

is really pretty lame. they are obviously hard workers here to get ahead.
NOT wanting to support illegals, i hear you.

worrying about power tools vs your safe when you aren't home-
totally legit

but i think you are being a bit foolish worrying about them because they are illegals/.

i'd be worried about ANYONE being in my house without me with power tools.
this kind of backwards profiling will end up with you thinking that white guy is ok to leave in you're house and bang your stuff is gone

I would feel better if I knew I wasnt paying to aid illegal's and I would also feel better if I could communicate with someone I found in my apartment.
Being able to communicate with the people in your apartment is valid. They should also have a written work order as well.

I know they are not citizens, and my landlord was not able to confirm or deny that they have green cards.

No, you don't know they are illegals. You have no way to know this one way or the other. You only suspect they are illegals. Just because you think you know it to be true does not logically or factually make it true. At least thusfar, you have identified no traits of these workmen that indicate unequivocally that they are illegal aliens.

They obviously dont care about our laws, that is at least one step in the wrong direction.

You made this statement based on the belief that the workmen are illegal. This is an interesting development where you have drawn a conclusion that you present as fact that is drawn from a conclusion you present as fact, but for which you have no factual evidence.

Suggesting they don't care about their laws because they are here illegally is pretty self righteous. I would be willing to bet that you and everyone else on this forum have managed to break laws during the course of your life. Does that mean that you also don't care about our laws since you have broken some yourself?

I would feel better if I knew I wasnt paying to aid illegal's and I would also feel better if I could communicate with someone I found in my apartment. I cant ask them, why are they here, what they are doing, or even who they work for. I know they are not citizens, and my landlord was not able to confirm or deny that they have green cards.

Have them arrested for breaking and entering or trespassing and just let the police and landlord work out the details - why they were there, who they were, etc. Even if they don't get taken anywhere you have a right to be concerned about people in your apt regardless of nationality or race. In NC it's illegal IT DOESNT MATTER WHETHER YOU RENT OR OWN the laws are still the same regarding your abode. Apartments may be different, but I rent a house and it's against the law for my landlord to just come in, let alone some dudes.

st

ps - and to rub it in and give you a little more conviction....now.....at any party or gathering you may be mentioned, things in your house, and the guys themselves may be just fine but if someone overhears whats in your place aor if they remember things about how to get in or have another way, one day somebody might owe money on threat of death, or they may be in the hole on a drug deal, or they may be tweaking for crack cocaine, your apartment will certainly come up on the list of possible targets. I am particular of who come around my place because I've had the experience to teach me "being a good person does not mean vulnerability to criminals and a**holes", especially when your family is involved.

I really doubt the landlord doesnt have the ability to enter your property. I am sure there is something in the lease about that.

From a Landlord/Tenant angle, in most states the Landlord must give 24 hours written notice before entering for anything other than an emergency. Check with your local Apartment Owners Association.

I also believe they must be supervised by eight landlord, manager or tenant and should NOT be given free reign in an occupied unit.
