An illegal immigrant was shot and killed Friday night shortly after crossing the border.

Several men illegally crossing the border into Arizona were in a remote desert area near Arivaca Road and mile post 21.

Pima County Sheriff's officials say that, just after 9 pm., the men saw a flash of what they thought was a weapon and quickly scattered.

One man was shot and died at the scene.

He's been identified as Reymundo Beltran-Aispuro.

Someone in the group used a cell phone to call family members back in California.

Border Patrol responded and located the victim by air.

Pima County's homicide unit is investigating the man's death as suspicisous. They believe that it could be drug related because the area is known for drug trafficking.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.

The thing is...the current situation with the drug trade is awfully reminiscent of the 1920's and the border smuggling of tequila. El Paso had shootouts every night, and there was a near-mythical lawman named Tom Threepersons who was considered one of the best gunfighters of all time, invented a slightly-canted holster with a trigger cutout for a fast draw. He got involved in a lot of shootouts with the booze-smugglers.

Maybe we need some of that sort back again?

Been several shootings of illegal aliens out here in the desert the past year. Wouldn't be suprised if it was drug related since most of them out in the desert are either drug or smuggler related shootings.

Now if its an American citizen taking measures in his own hands then I hope he/she gets caught and prosecuted. Though I disagree whole heartedly about them coming across illegally, I don't want to see them being killed trying to get to a better life. Come in legally and I'll welcome you, do it illegally and I'll help send you back. Just not in a body bag.
