I've always thought this was the case. There are several gun stores where allmost all employees openly carry here in Northern Illinois. Yet, according to this article it is not legal:

http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/1224963,CST-NWS-law16.article

"Illinois law allows people to carry a gun in a "fixed place of business," but the person must be the owner or have a proprietary interest in the business -- not just an employee."

Is the Sun-Times correct on this or are they totally wet? Or is a gun shop some sort of exception carved into the law?

(b) Subsections 24‑1(a)(4) and 24‑1(a)(10) and Section 24‑1.6 do not apply to or affect any of the following:
(1) Members of any club or organization organized
for the purpose of practicing shooting at targets upon established target ranges, whether public or private, and patrons of such ranges, while such members or patrons are using their firearms on those target ranges.

If the gunstore has a range they may feel they are covered by this.

I would also point out that 24-1(a)(4) only covers concealed firearms, or when in a vehicle. 24-1(a)(10) covers public areas.

I think they might be legal based on either it being a range or it not being concealed, or both.

Illinois gun laws are extraordinarily badly written. its almost like they are trying to "get" people.

If the clerk was carrying concealed, he may well be in for a world of hurt.

The wording of the statute (in part):
(4)Carries or possesses in any vehicle or concealed on or about his person except when on his land or in his own abode or fixed place of business any pistol, revolver, stun gun or taser or other firearm,
I think a good case can be made that if he is not the owner of the buisness, he can't carry concealed there.

chicago has a total ban on guns,:uhoh: but there is a shooting victim almost everyday in chi town:confused:

it take me less than an hour to get to wisconsin, where you can open carry:D

its like everything else..............people do what they want until big brother brings the whip down:eek:

The places that I am thinking about it is totally open, in a holster. These are Megasports and "Guns" (no other name than that), both in Plainfield, very close to Joliet. "Guns" just went out of business recently. Megasports is doing well.

technically you can. but, have you actually done so in an urban area?

its not as simple as you might think.

school zones are a problem for one thing.

Indiana OTOH is as close as WI and they accept every state's permits.
