A few weeks ago I purchased a handgun at a dealer and they had me fill out an additional form that asked for my occupation, purpose of the purchase, etc. This is the first time I've been asked for this and was told its state law. Apparently it is:

(720 ILCS 5/24‑4) (from Ch. 38, par. 24‑4)
Sec. 24‑4. Register of sales by dealer.
(a) Any seller of firearms of a size which may be concealed upon the person, other than a manufacturer selling to a bona fide wholesaler or retailer or a wholesaler selling to a bona fide retailer, shall keep a register of all firearms sold or given away.
(b) Such register shall contain the date of the sale or gift, the name, address, age and occupation of the person to whom the weapon is sold or given, the price of the weapon, the kind, description and number of the weapon, and the purpose for which it is purchased and obtained.
(c) Such seller on demand of a peace officer shall produce for inspection the register and allow such peace officer to inspect such register and all stock on hand.
(d) Sentence.
Violation of this Section is a Class B misdemeanor.
(Source: P. A. 77‑2638.)

I'm curious if everyone else's dealers collect this or if alot are missing out on it. The place I used to buy from that didn't is out of business for reasons I'm not sure of... On another note I'm curious what's been done historically with the occupation and purpose information.

I never heard of such a thing. I just picked up my new 625JM Smith & Wesson last week, filled out the 4473 on Tuesday and picked up on Saturday. Also in 2005 I bought 2 other S&W's and my wife bought one and all we ever did is the 4473 forms. I figure they are up to date on legal forms since they deal in firearms and police equipment with cops in and out all day long. Jim.

No, I've never had to fill out anything but a 4473. I've bought handguns from several dealers down here and never heard of this.

I'd bet since it's in the criminal code, most dealers aren't aware of it. Heck I've been a peace officer in Illinois since 1985 and I never heard of it till I read your post.

My gunstore (The one I go to I wished I owned it) told me about something similar to this the last handgun I purchased.

I did not have to fill out a seperate piece of paper but rather they wrote the info on the reciept of which they keep a copy. Was kinda fun wathcing them try to fit "Nuclear Medicine Technologist" on the little space they had to work with :) .

They did not like doing this but stated it was mandatory.

Since I've never caught them in a error on firearms law I tend to believe them. They smetimes will refuse to do certain things but will freely admit privately that they are technically legal but they want to avoid even the appearance of anything illegal. Given that they are located in a Chicago Surburb this is understandable. "Sting" operations are common, CAGE (Chicago Area Gun Enforcemnt IIRC ) does exist, "Da Boss" Mayor Daley won a law battle with BATFE a few years back, seems Chicago now has access to BATFE data (Sorry do not remember details) so gunstores around here have to very carefull.

What in the. . . . I'm almost certain that language was in one of the bills that made up Daley's "Annual Package" of anti-gun bills--several years ago, the first time he did it. I think there were eleven bills that time.

I KNOW it didn't pass that year or the next. . . . surely they didn't get this passed without trumpeting their victory. Has it been there all along, forgotten by everybody? Research is indicated here.
