Illinois House rejects measure to let victims sue gun dealers

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Gun-control advocates suffered another defeat at the state Capitol Wednesday, when the Illinois House easily turned back an attempt to let victims of gun violence sue gun dealers.

The proposal got just 48 "yes" votes, well shy of the 60 needed to pass. But the bill's sponsor, Rep. Robert Molaro, a Democrat from Chicago, used a parliamentary maneuver that allows him to call it for another vote later.

Molaro's measure would allow suits against gun dealers who sell to people who shouldn't legally have guns or to people who dealers know will use the guns illegally. Molaro compared the proposal to liquor laws that permit action against bartenders who recklessly overserve drunken customers.

"I think a gun can do a heck of a lot more damage than pouring someone a beer," Molaro said.

Last November, the state Supreme Court threw out such gun-dealer suits but indicated that lawmakers should consider legislation allowing them.

Critics, led by the National Rifle Association and gun-rights advocates, said this would encourage unnecessary lawsuits.

But there is a lot more work to do this legislative session:

This law makes as much sense as a law with my rewording would,
"Molaro's measure would allow suits against car dealers who sell to people who shouldn't legally have cars or to people who dealers know will use the cars illegally."
Maybe one of his constituent should ask him to attach something like this to his bill.
