Illuminated reticle scopes. Washed out in the dark? Need help.

I already know the answer to this question, but an illuninated reticule scope doesn't get washed out by the light used to light the reticle, does it? Of course not. If you turn it on, and the complete field of view is washed out by the light, it makes it useless.

Is there any reason to have a scope that washes out the reticle at night? Are there any scopes that do this on purpose? If one does this, is it functioning correctly?

Reason being is that I traded a shotgun and some cash for a scope with an illuminated reticle (traded during the day), but when I tried it in a dark room and turned on the illumination, I could not see anything but a washed out circle (either red or green, depending upon the selection) where I should have been seeing the house outside my sliding glass door!

I traded a highroad member (or rather his father through the highroad member) who is claiming that it is normal.

Opinions?

Ps. I have another scope with an illuminated reticle, and it functions correctly.

That sure doesnt sound right to me.

Most illuminated reticles that I have looked through are good in low light conditions such as indoors or cloudy days or the darkness of suburbia. If this is not working for you, you have a problem.

In full sunlight many lighted reticles are not bright enough to be usefull. This is fairly normal.

If the reticle illumination is too bright, there may be too much contrast to see the target in actual low light. If this is the case, use the brightness adjuster to reduce it.

Zak, this happens on even the lowest setting.

I got ahold of the company who sells this brand, and they will have me send it in for review, and possible replacement.

Red State, that is what I thought. The idea of an illuminated reticle IS that it is useful in low light setting, but it is impossible with this scope as it is. On power 1, there is a little "ghosting", but on 4, all you see is a green or red washout (obviously worse with the green). Hopefully I will be sent a new one.

Never seen anything like this with Trijicon, Leupold, S&B, Hensoldt, USO, Burris, or Premier illuminated reticles.

I have a BSA that doesn't do that! No question, I was ripped off by this forum member's dad, and the forum member was absolutely NO help. He WAS there for the trade.

Well, . . . it is official. The user's dad traded me a scope that he stripped the turrets on. Just got word back from the company who made it.

In good faith, I trade a FULLY functional shotgun, and he trades a scope with turrets that are stripped.

I feel that it is highly probable that, if I tried to do anything about it, he would be as uncaring as his son by saying "you made the deal, that's too bad for you".

What would YOU do in my case?

From the problems you are having sounds like a poor quality scope to me. Hope you are not into it to much.

That is really quite unfortunate. Is the scope manufacturer going to help you/replace the scope for you? That might be one option. If not,

If we're talking about value over a couple hundred dollars, I believe it would be grounds to get law enforcement involved (particularly due to the involvement of firearms). That's just not right. At the very least, see if he'll reverse the trade w/o involving anyone else, with assumed innocence on their parts. Sounds to me that, as it stands, it amounts to theft.

If it were up to me, I'd say the forum member should be named here so that nobody else gets burned by him and his deceitful dad. No, it's not "normal" for an illuminated scope to be useless at night.

The scope was replaced, . . . but replaced with a 4-16X42. Probably will sell it, still.

The person I traded was the dad of user Expertowgunner, . . . who when I attempted to PM him (Expertowgunner) about this, basically told me that it was his dad that I did the deal with, and that if I kept PMing him about it, he would get the moderators involved. I think he was accusing me of harrassment!

He had a "sucks to be you" attitude.

it does suck to be you should have called back my dad after the trade and not bash me about it. you shouldnt complain anymore and trust me that broke dick shotgun isnt worth your time getting back has extractor issues and needs a new coat of paint for some reason it rusts very fast even with the application of either clp or rem oil.

That is absolutely untrue. That shotgun was in working order with NO rust at all, and a parkerized finish! Don't try to turn this issue back on me!!! And I'm no longer wanting to do business with you or your dad. I'll be placing you on my ignore list from here on.

Uh, . . you're on my "ignore list", meaning that I no longer care what you have to say.

Bottom line is, . . . the shotgun worked properly, and the finish was fine. The scope had stripped turrets and the illumination was useless in any low light conditions. End of discussion.
