I live in utah and my grandfather bought a pistol a few months ago and doesnt want it anymore so he wants to give it to me. but im just curious if its even legal for me to go up in the mountains or to a range by Myself or with friends 18+ and shoot the gun? and second question. is there a way for me to own the gun if he wants to give it to me? im just very confused on these laws any help is MUCH appreciated.

It will depend on state law. By Federal law a person 18 or older can own a handgun and can purchase one from a private person, but not from a dealer.

Yes you can. It is legal to own. You can legally open carry it unloaded (no round chambered, loaded magazine is still fine). If you get a carry permit you can conceal carry, though you must be 21 to get a Utah permit, but other states you can get one at your current age. Utah honors all states permits.

Caveat: Your grandad must also live in Utah.

Or else you have to go through an FFL. You can't get a gun through an FFL only being 19.

Better check state law to see if you can take it to go practice.
