For long guns, it should not matter.
You may purchase long guns in ANY State, as a resident of ANY State, provided that the firearm is legal to own in both the State of purchase AND your State of residence.
Example: I have gone to the Nationals in Camp Perry, Ohio three times. While there, I can purchase and take possession of ANY long gun, even though I am a resident of Washington State.
However, you may NOT take possession of a handgun in another State.
Example:
While at Camp Perry, I handled, fondled and drooled over many handguns for sale. I ended up purchasing a Hammerli 280, match .22. I paid for it there; the dealer is located in Texas. They went back to Texas with my pistol, and from there shipped it to my FFL (a dealer in Auburn, WA.) after he faxed them an FFL. My dealer friend then transferred it to me.
For those who live in California or another State with restrictive long gun laws, the firearm you purchase MUST be on the CA DOJ approved list. Example: You may NOT purchase a Colt LE 6920 out of state, and have it shipped to you in California. You also may NOT purchase a 6920 and take possession of it, because (AFAIK) it is not legal to own in California.
