nwilliams, can you post some really big copies of th 3rd, 5th, and 6th pictures? I'd like to use them as my wallpaper.

So I did some research and found out the following information.

According to the serial number (53426xx) this Inland Div rifle was manufactured between Jan 1944 and Aug 1944 and the date on the barrel is 7/44.

Not sure how significant this is but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Great carbine.
I've got a Winnie that looks as good as yours.
Mine was an "NRA gun" from @ 1965-69. The
owned didn't remember when he ordered it.
Picked it up for $500 with an OEM GI canvas
carry bag,@6 mags.

The round bolt, adjustable stamped rear sight, and four rivet foregrip began with Inland serial # 5,000,000 or close to that. If your rifle has a lower number than that then those parts will have been upgraded from original. The T4 barrel band wasn't incorporated until the end of 1944 so your lack of one is correct to a 7/44 barrel date.

I think it was Larry Ruth who said back in the early 1970's that there's no such thing as a correct M1 carbine. Apparently they were all modified in one way or another almost from the day they were issued. Ruth was saying that the chase for correctness is a waste of time even that long ago.

This is a good example of a correct Inland. Doubt it ever made it to any theatre of war though - it's too nice. Looks too much like one of the recently manufactured copies for my taste.

Not correct...at least the stock isn't. It's an Underwood stock and shouldn't be on an Inland.

For a better opinion you will need to look at all the small parts and post what markings are on them. Need more details...ser# (mark out the last three if you want), markings stamped into the underside of the handguard etc.

There are such things as "correct" carbines...you just have to look for them as they are out there.

PS your sling is on backwards! :)

So I've stipped my carbine and while I cleaned it I jotted down all the different proof marks I could find and tried to research what they all meant.

Here is what I came up with so far.

•Receiver: Inland 53426xx
•Barrel: Marked “Inland Mfg, Div. General Motors 7/44”
•Bolt: Marked “OI” (Overton Co.) correct for Inland
•Slide: Type 5 Marked “7160091” and “B” on bottom, marked “PI” on inside (Packard Manufacturing Co. of Indianapolis) correct for Inland.
•Trigger Housing: Marked “Inland
•Hammer: Marked “HI” (Hemphill Co.) correct for Inland
•Handguard: type 1 marked “OI” (Overton Co.) correct for Inland
•Stock: Marked “UEF” next to a Springfield logo and stamped with a “P” on the bottom of the grip.
•Buttplate: Underwood pattern
•Barrel Band: Unidentified proof mark
•Recoil Plate: Underwood marked “.u.”
•Front Sight: Marked “N” (Niedner Rifle Corp. of Dowagiac, MI) correct for Inland.
•Rear Sight: Type 3 marked “I.R. Co.” and numbered “7160060” (International Register Co. of Chicago, IL) correct for Inland

Forgot to mention the mag proofs indicate that three are Winchester, one is Union Hardware, one is Rock-Ola and one is Inland.

You have an almost entirely correct Inland there.

To obtain an Inland stock of that vintage should not be too hard.

Me?

I'd leave it as is. All the important parts are consistent.

Shoot it and show us the targets.

:D

Yeah I don't have any real desire to change anything on it, as long as it works I'm happy.

Hopefully I'll get to shoot it this weekend or sometime next week.

Congrats. That is a very nice carbine, you lucky devil. Have one coming very soon from CMP, doubt it'll be that nice, but I'll take 'er anyway.

;)

They're neat little rifles and the historical aspects are much of the reason they are so desirable.

Just wondering, why would you mark out some of the digits of the serial number? Afraid someone will claim you stole it? I was at the CMP store in Anniston and picked up a carbine and garand. the Garand needs some work but the springfield recieve has a 202XXX serial on it.

Just a habit, I've never had a problem posting pictures of the serial numbers on my guns so I'm not really sure why I bother x'ing out numbers when I'm typing. Probably just a habit I picked up on gun forums over the years.

Finally I found ammo today!!

So I just picked up 240 rounds of Lake City surplus ammo today at a local gun shop. It came in 120 round battle packs and not badly priced either at $44.95 for 120 rounds!! They had two more battle packs and I regret not buying them so I'll probably go back tomorrow pick them up.

I was so happy to find this ammo that it prompted me to take a new pic:D

For someone who majored in photography you need to work on your lighting a bit. Your pics are at least one stop under exposed.

Composition is good!
