Now, of course, I have to mandate that you get a .22 next. Yes 91/30s and SKS rifles are nice (have an SKS, gettinga 91/30 soon with my brand new C&R), but ammo costs, while cheap, still don't compare to good old .22 LR.
I bought a 30-30 as my first rifle, and if I could do it again I'd get a .22. It gets lots of use, due to it's inexpensive ammo, low noise and recoil. Really helps me work on my accuracy, since I'm still a relatively new shooter.
Basically, there is no good reason not to have a .22.
