He could have brought ammo as well, lit just needs to be in a sepperate case, similar to the pistol case.

There is no requirement for the ammo to be in a separate case. I fly with my pistol in a $5.00 case I bought from Ace Hardware, slide locked back so that it shows easily unloaded on xray, the empty magazine next to the gun - not in it, and a factory box of ammo in the same $5 case as the gun. That way at the destination all I have to do is take the one case out of my luggage and load up - no need to fish for any loose parts or ammo in the luggage.

It is easier and cheaper to fly with firearms that it is to ship them to yourself.

If you ship them, UPS is the only carrier and they require them to be shipped 2-day air at minimum since you aren't an FFL or shipping to an FFL. That can easily be over $100.

If you fly with them, DC airports are more of a pain than others (I fly in and out of Dulles a couple of times a year) but not all that bad. To check a gun, it must be:
1) unloaded and ammunition packed securely
2) packed in a hard-sided case
3) locked with a lock to which only you have the key (no TSA locks) or the combination--a typical padlock is fine
4) declared to the ticket agent, who will have you sign a declaration that the gun is unloaded

You may or may not be required to accompany your bag(s) to the TSA X-ray machine--it varies by airport but usually this is required flying out of DC.

The ammo is not required per TSA to be packed separately but most airlines don't want it to be in the gun case. You could just buy more ammo at your destination if you want to eliminate that (admittedly minor) hassle.
