possible work related move

There is a possibility that I may have the opportunity to move from upstate NY to Cincinnati, OH for work. I understand that one can live in OH, IN or KY and still have a nice commute to Cinc.

Are any of these three states better or worse for firearms in general and CCW / (hopefully not needed) self-defense laws?

Do any of these states require permits simply to possess handguns (I'm from NY, remember - be gentle if this is a totally silly question, that's how it is here)?

How much hassle is it to CCW across state lines for an everyday work commute? Would I maybe want to consider just living in OH even if IN or KY is more liberal regarding firearms / CCW?

Lastly, where would I go to look for info about the laws regarding firearms / CCW for these states?

I can't answer all of your questions, but in IN, you need a permit to carry but not to possess...You can have as many handguns as you want as long as you pass the background check. The permit is only either 125 or 150 for a lifetime.

You'd have to check OH laws to see if you could use your IN CCW in OH(some places allow it, but I don't know which).

I've never lived in KY, but from what I've heard they love their guns too

So you shouldn't really have a problem with either.

In general most any state will be easier than NY (excepting a few such as California)

There's no gun registration in Ohio.

I don't believe that Ohio recognizes New York's CCW though, so you would have to either get an Ohio one or one from a state that Ohio has reciprocity with.

Don't know about the other states, but here's a quick rundown on Ohio. If I make a mistake, I'm sure some other Buckeye will correct me.

No permit needed to buy. No state Firearm Owner ID card.

No registration.

CCW after passing background check and taking 12 hrs coursework.

As of now, state gun law preemption is in effect, but may be challenged by big cities. But, as of now there are no silly assault rifle/weapon bans which had previously been in effect in some of the bigger cities.

I *think* open carry is legal, but not done in most urban/suburban areas, AFAIK.

Also in Ohio you need to inform a LEO that you are carrying during an official confrontation, like a traffic stop. It is a felony not to.
