The title says it all.

I hate seeing pics from what's going on in Lebanon with Shiite Hezbollah gunmen carrying optic equipped American M16's. :fire::fire:

I'd much rather see them with some reliable but crappy old beat up AK.

Well, how did they get the M-16s? Did we issue them or did they obtain them through other means, like theft? If we've been issuing them, I feel your pain, but don't get ahead of yourself.

OTOH... maybe they won't maintain them well, the guns will jam at the most inopportune time, and the Shiite will take one for the cause ...:p:D

How do you know they're american M16's? they're probably Iranian. Maybe Chinese. Slight chance of Canadian.

My guess is they probably came from Jordan or were orginally sold to Palestinian Security forces and ended up in Hezbollah hands.

I'm sure they weren't supposed to end up with Hezbollah but any one of us here could have told the idiots in our government what would happen with them.

And I totally agree with the 'nicer than I can buy' sentiment.

They could have come from anywhere. For instance, in 1975 at the fall of Saigon, the North Vietnamese captured huge stores of arms, all kinds, including over 900,000 M-16s. There is no doubt, knowing the regime's desperate need for cash over the next two decades, that they sold tons of these weapons on the world market. Every third world mud hut country in the darkest corners of the planet now have M-16's and a serial number check on captured samples might be very interesting to trace.

...but it doesn't piss you off to see Americans with Iraqi or Afghani AK47s?

How do you know they are American? Heck, they may not even be American made and if so, sold to a foreign power under contract and then at that point, they are not American guns, but the guns of the foreign power.

With that said, if it pisses you off, then go do something about it!!!

The Chinese, Canadians, Iranians, and a couple other countries make licensed and unlicensed M16s.

And I'd rather see them with accurate but crappy beat up M16s than AKs.

Chances are, they aren't going to be able to keep maintenance up on them and probably don't have the stores of replacement parts that an American armory would have, or that they'd have for the AKs.

Why does it matter what type of guns they use?

....."Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery".....not the first time it's happened, won't be the last...remember when the Russians copied the B-29 Stratofortress .

When I was a kid, most self-respecting jihadist scoundrels wouldn't be caught dead with one of those.

I'd think those sand, um, rats would take any and everything they could get their filthy claws on.

The State Department has a lot of Clinton and Carter era trolls who believe we can be friends with Arab terrorists like Hamas and Hezbollah by giving them weapons. Those M-16s and ammo were "for peaceful police purposes". Yeah right!

I recall an interesting story about a Marine officer who decided to see how much abuse it takes to put an AK out of action. He spent an extended period of time (don't remember- it was weeks at least) shooting it with corrosive ammo and no maintenance, lube, or cleaning whatsoever, and throwing it in his locker until next time. When he pulled it out green crystals oozed from the bore and gas system. The bolt was frozen and had to be kicked open. The rifle never quit working. The M16/AR15 platform is more accurate and works just dandy with regular service and lube- usually. I doubt the M-4 would have kept on tickin' with no maintenance. The AK was designed to work all the time when used in extreme conditions by people who cook over an open fire and never saw flush toilets. (Same to be said for SKS.) There's a place for both, which is why it's best to have one of each if you can afford it.

IN light of the AR/M16 platforms reliability when not cleaned and pressed daily, and in light of the care to firearms usually given by the un trained, I am actually quite happy they have the mattel gun over their.

Have to agree with Pete F, they can have all the junky .22 rifles they want. I would worry more if they carried M 14s or Kalishnikovs.

What's with all the assumptions that they are all backwards, untrained, barbarians.

Hizbollah is a very well trained, well equipped, and modern force. No, they are not up to the standards of the IDF or U.S. military, but they are giving the Lebanese a run for their money (and if it goes to full-scale civil war they will probably win).

Just because they are terrorists doesn't mean they are cave dwellers.

Oh, as for where they got the guns, probably a combination of things. The Palestinians were given a lot of M16s by both the U.S. and Israeli governments as part of the "peace process" and Hamas took over Gaza (Hamas and Hizbollah are friendly). The Lebanese forces are backed by the U.S., they have large stocks of U.S. arms. Many were probably taken from Lebanese armories, sometimes turned over by sympathizing Lebanese soldiers and police.

Jordan is probably the source. Consider that when Zarquawi was alive, he was frequently seen with m-16s as well. They are probably given to "security forces" in the region. Since we are not (in a direct way) at war with these groups, it is unlikely that they came off of a dead US soldier. So take a pill and relax. :)

well dont forget, there probably isn't any corrosive 5.56 ammo either(ive never head of any anyways), so they arent going to rust as bad as the other firearms will. The probably shooting good Lake city surplus lol. The m16 can take more than people give it credit for. Why cant they get parts? they have the internet even in those countries. they're probably the ones starting all of these which AR to buy threads.

Some time ago Clinton gave the Palestinian government about 10,000 M16s as part of a peace deal. Most don't recall it but it is true none the less.

"gunmen?"

That's a left-media term...

Sigh...

And are you maintaining that the M-16 rifles have the will to decide who will carry and fight with them? That the rifles determine how they are aimed, and when the trigger is pulled?

Sigh...

Inanimate objects, guys...
