I'm torn...Advice?

I got the Savage Model 11 package gun in .243 last year. It's a one MOA rifle with a great trigger. I beat it all over heck last year, and it doesn't look any worse for the wear.

Sure, the much maligned stock is squishy. You can make it contact the barrel, but I haven't had it affect my shooting. Just don't go gorilla on it. Besides, it fits me very well, and offers a natural shooting position with a good cheek weld, something the cheapo Remingtons did not.

My kids will be carrying it in the years to come. I buy guns to shoot, not to enhance my self esteem. Get the Savage.

Ranting;

Do you reload? If not, are you considering getting started in it? Ala Dan brought up the introduction of McCarthy's stinking cowflop, now let's go down that road a bit.

You might want to consider buying a stripped lower for an AR platform. You can obtain one for under $100.00 without too much effort. I did just that late last year. Another facet to think about is indeed ammo. If the anti's can, they'll dry up ammo availability along with anything else that can be banned. Gun does you no good if there's no ammo to feed it, right?

I'm still buying guns, but not many and not often. I no longer have needs in that direction, just wants. I am, however, buying components. I'd like to see my kids & grandchildren not having to worry about feeding the guns they inherit.

I'd get the Savage or the Stevens. If you go for the Stevens think about installing an aftermarket trigger. Add a quality scope and quality mounts and you'll be pragmaticly happy. If you don't handload now would be the time to start. Essex

I, too, was once a big fan of the .243. But I found something better. I know you said you have decided on the caliber and if that is so, so be it. But i am now shooting a "more perfect" middle caliber in the 6.5X55. Also, the .260 fills this niche. You have the recoil and report of a .243 and the ballistics of a
.270. Something to think about, anyway. Anyway, have fun making your choice.
