Ruger P series for IDPA?

I had a Ruger P95 and parted with it about a year ago. I've regretted it ever since. It had a great trigger and was pretty accurate, let's not forget reliable and durable. I'm thinking of buying another Ruger P series pistol. I wanted to know which one (P89, P90 or, P95) has the upper hand on the others? I was also wondering does anyone use one of these for IDPA or other pistol shooting competitions? And also what's the best way to get into pistol shooting competitions as a beginner? I know it's alot of questions, but any info and experience will be appreciated. Thanks

I am a fan of the P95, just a great no-nonsense pistol. And if I rmember correctly, Ayoob used one in IDPA before switching to a Glock and most recently and S&W M&P Pro. He did pretty good from what I have read!

The most accurate will likely be the P90...I think that is what Ayoob was using. Accuracy will always be most important, after reliability, in competition.

I've seen a couple of SR9s in IDPA, but never the models you've listed...aren't they out of production?

Most IDPA clubs have a mandatory orientation class before starting...it is a good starting point

The P90, and the P95 are still in production. Check out the SR9, and the P345, too.

P90 is out of production. The only P-Series Ruger's left are the P345 and P95.

While the P90 is out of production as of today, there are still many left new on the shelves. Same with the P944. I checked the Ruger catalog in 12/2011, and the P90 was still listed, as was the P944. The guns were discontinued in January?

So it seems that the P90 is better. Is that what you guys are saying? What kind of frame does the P90 have and how much do they run brand new?

The P90 has been out of production for several months, probably since Spring of 2011.

The P90 has an aluminum frame and is the .45 ACP family member with the P85, and P89 (I don't know much about the P91, P94, P944 models). These all have a barrel link like the 1911.

The P95, P97, P345 are all polymer framed pistols and replaced the barrel link with a cam block.

Here is an old P90 Fan thread with the last post in Jan of 2011. At that time the only P90's showing in the Ruger catalog were the Davidson's exclusives. Within a couple of months of the last post in this thread Davidson's no longer had any P90's of any kind.

If Ruger were still manufacturing the P90 in Dec 2011, my guess is Davidson's would still have them.

You may still find them new on the self, but I haven't seen any new P90's on the dealer shelves for at least 8-10 months (probably longer). However, with the cost of ammo what it is, you may find lightly used P90's show up as folks move to the lower cost ammo of 9MM.

Thanks for the info guys. A guy wants to sell his P90 to me for $325 (is this a good deal?) He claims that it hasn't been fired much but of course there is no way to tell. Whats the lifespan on these pistols? I know their built like tanks, but still would like to know. What to look for when checking for defects? Thanks again for all the info and sources guys.
