Here's the situation. I've wanted an XD9 for several years. But after handling an MP9, I'm schwaffling back and forth.

I like the XDs grip safety. With three kids in the house, that is a big plus for me. (FWIW, I do not keep any guns or mags loaded. Also, I am not CCL'ed, but I continue to hope the Mrs. will one day relent and let me do that. This is basically a range gun that has high hopes). But, to me, the small grip panel on the MP9 feels a shade better, plus its rubber feel is also nice and it has a stainless slide. I would say the MP gets an A+; the XD an A-.

I was set to go MP9 until I found a used XD9 locally, probably 90-95%, for $390, after tax. The new MP will be about $525, but then take the $50 off, bringing it down to $475 (plus two extra mags).

The question is, would you give an extra $100 for an A+ fit instead of an A-? If I go with the less expensive XD, I might also have enough cash to get me a new .22 or .17 rifle as well.

Thoughts appreciated...

If it were me, I'd go for the A+ in any hang gun, grip, feel, wise, as the "little (better) things" are what make for a great shooter IMO.

Also, if you went with the XD9, then added some rubber grips, it might well, make it a bit wider than what you felt, as an A+ on the MP9

Not knowing what caliber we're talking about here, I'd say the A+ gun will cost you less than the A- gun, in terms of money spent to get the gun, accuracy, down.

IMHO, it is precisely the "little things" that make the Big Difference over the long-run, of contentment.

Best of luck,

For ME I have learned to get what I want the most in these situations. If I don't I end up regretting or second guessing it later. A $100 may seem like a lot relative to the price of the gun. In the grand scope when you include potential accessories like holsters and night sights then factor in the cost of ammunition, range fees etc... it's really not that much.

Any chance you can rent similar models somewhere? Of course there goes more money. I know because I just went through the whole XD, M&P Glock decision. I spent well over the $100 in rental, range and ammo fees for that process.

Buy what you want the first time. It is ALWAYS cheaper in the long run. I don't care whether it's guns, motorcycles, cars, computers, or guitars - everything I've ever been involved with. Get what you want the first time. Trying to "make do" with something almost as good is an exercise in frustration. If it's the MP9 that feels right, get the MP9.

Also, IMHO, relying on a grip safety for any type of security from kids is a false hope. Secure the gun completely (or ensure your kids are aware and trained properly) and it won't matter if it has no safety whatsoever.

i normally practice the get what you want even if it is a little more, but in this case i have to recomend the xd i have 2 and love them, have lots of experince with em they are reliable, accurate, and everything that you would want in a handgun no matter what you are planning on using it for. the ergos on the m&p are great but i am a huge xd fan and there is no other ploymer framed gun that i prefer more.

As long as I had, and have, kids in the house, my guns have been locked up.

Get the gun you like best and rely on a safe or something to keep your kids safe, not a safety on a gun.

Yes, in the long run you will be happier with what you really wanted in the first place.

Ask me how much money I have saved buying something "cheaper" and then sold/traded for what I really wanted later.

I have four small kids, and keep my M&P9c locked and loaded, one in the pipe. That loaded pistol is locked up in small safe with a pushbutton keypad. I used to keep my guns unloaded, until the first time I needed it...

BTW- The M&P is an excellent pistol. 1100 rounds through and not one problem...

Also, if you haven't yet, check out www.corneredcat.com it's run by one of the mods here and deals extensively with gun safety in a home with children. It's definitely worth a look...

Go with the one you really want. If you get the A- gun, you'll regret it long after the sweetness of the lower price wears off.

My impression is that you like the M&P's hand fit better. (As do I.) I think you would be happier in the long run if you were to buy what pleases you the first time. If it is any help, you can get it with a magazine disconnect "safety" (term used advisedly).

Safety clarification

If I presented an image that I leave guns laying around for my kids to "find," I misrepresented myself. They are all put away & locked up - guns AND ammo. My two daughters (10 & 6) know the basic gun safety rules (the 10-year old knows the 4-rules; the 6-year old is at "don't touch and get an adult" stage) and my son...well, while we as parents can never be too careful, a) he cannot reach my safe and b) he doesn't go anywhere else where firearms are present w/out me or Mom.

So...the XD's safety might be more for my own peace of mind than anything else. The mag disconnect might be an acceptable alternative. Simple minds, you know...

BTW: both are 9mms I'm considering.

Thanks, all.

In five years will the $100 really make a difference? Especially once you factor in that you are buying used (nothing wrong with it, but you are taking more of a chance buying used), and also that you won't get 4 mags with the gun, which you would with the M&P.

Think in terms of 5 years from now. Will the $100 matter, or will it matter that you got a gun that you REALLY like, fits you like a glove, and you have 4 mags for it?

I've recently become a huge XD fan and .22's are hard to beat, but if you already know you prefer the M&P over the XD you know you'll still feel the same way after you buy it. If for some reason your feelings change after you purchase it, you can always sell/trade it. $100 more on a firearm for me is well worth getting what I truly want, plus figure in the costs of the mags.

I was in the same boat

I went through the exact same thing... right down to the wife and kids (3)

Here is what I did:

For the wife and CCW, stay up with her and watch the local news together and point out that the world is getting uglier by the day. Tell her that it is about protecting the most valuable asset that you have.... her and the kids (I now have new CCW permit)

About the saftey: get a safe!!!!!!

and the last, the pistol: I first bought a S/A XD and about 2-3 weeks later I traded it back to the dealer for a M&P 9c, couldnt be happier.

P.s If you need more advice on the wife issue, PM me. I did it and my wife is a Liberal Social Worker for the county I live in and she is hates guns.

I agree that the M&P is more comfortable. S&W also has great customer service. The M&P is made in the USA. A lot of PDs have adopted the M&P, so aftermarket support (sights, holsters) will be better for the M&P if it isn't already. It'll be a new gun... no questions about whether or not it was abused. Two extra mags are nice... worth maybe $20 ea?

And it feels better. Get the M&P.

If you can hold out for another month, I'd go to the Jan. 19 gun show in Houston and look for these folks - http://www.ajcsportshop.com/shows.html.

Last DFW show they were at, the M&P9 ran $399 with a $50 rebate from S&W on top of that. So you'd be getting in even cheaper than what you're looking at now.

I've purchased three or four guns from them now, always got a good deal.
