On the 4th Saturday of every month, I shoot Silhouette Air Pistol At the Modesto Rifle Club. One of the members, Rick, was the first national champion in this sport, and yesterday he shot the most impressive group I have ever seen.

Rick took empty .22 casings and placed them at the ram line (18 yards) away, with the empty hole of the casing facing him. He then shot from the Creedmore position (laying down with the pistol in one hand supported by the side of his leg).

He was shooting a 5 shot compressed air pistol with a scope. He hit all 5 casings, and buldged the back of three of them! All 5 casings had part or all of a pellet rattling around in them when we found them!

Rick had split 5 playing cards edgewise before, but this exhibition was unbelievable!

For those of you near to Modesto, you are invited to join us; we can loan you an airpistol! Unfortunately, Rick is moving to the San Diego area and leaves Thursday, so he probably will only make a few meets a year.

Very cool, Rick sounds like a talented fellow indeed. I've been meaning to get into airguns lately, but unfortunately I'm a little too far to take ya'll up on your kind offer!

Any chance you could offer some advice on a decent entry-level pistol suitable for these types of competition?

Kingpin, I would recommend the IZH 46 strongly, and the less expensive Daisy 747. The Daisy is around $200, and the IZH runs close to $500 now (I got mine for $169, but that was a few years ago.) The Daisy has a Walthers barrel, and is a great starter gun. The first national champion, Rick Davis of the above post, used a Daisy to win the title. We usually put rifle scopes on the pistols if we are not shooting open sight, and I shoot an 8-32 power scope, usually at about 24 power. The IZH and Daisy will give you a variation of about .184 inches with a five shot group. If you go the Feinwerkbau or one of the finer pistols, the variation is .008. Good luck my friend!
Feel free to PM me if you have other questions; air pistols will greatly improve your shooting of larger calibers by the way!

Daisy, daisy...

That .22 casing trick really is fine shooting.
About the Daisy...Mr. Davis is not the only one. The late Don Nygord used a Daisy (with a trigger job by him) to win a National championship in the International venue. Some years ago now.
FWB - I have an older FWB CO2 gun (a gift from my wife) that remains the most accurate gun that I own.
They all come with a test target.....a single hole about the size of a pellet through which five shots have passed.
