I have always been told that improved cylinder is the best choke for buckshot and slugs. My gunsmith is putting the finishing touches on my 870 and he suggests trying both the IC and modified choke tubes. Anyone have better results with modified choke?

My Nashville Scattergun Tech 870 had the modified sleeve. It worked very well with slus and #1 buck, not bad with 00 buck. Slugs worked OK, some brands tight, some loose at 50y.

My 1100 works very well with 00 buck and has a imp cyl choke. Slugs are minute of gallon milk jug at 50y.

Those two guns reflect a generality.

Buddy has a no choke (full choke barrel handcut to 18.5 inches) 870 that loves 00 buck and spits anything smaller into horrid groups. Slugs cloverleaf at 50y. I would not have bet that way, but paper dosen't lie.

Every shotgun is an individual. :)
