Improving my AK47

in the name of everything sweet and pure, please do not tapco-ize your rifle. the ak is a very capable rifle and, with a red dot sight, it requires nothing more to be very competitive out to about 150yds or so except possibly a compensator.

While hanging lasers, flashlights, and bipods on an AK may not make a lot of sense, the AK isn't the perfect platform.

I've put together a tantal in 5.45 with hungarian amd-65 rubber grips. I've seen the light about the "retractable" CAR-15 style stocks and will put one of those on pretty much any gun that I have that'll accept one.

I'll probably put a scout scope mount on to replace the rear sight an put a 40mm red dot on it. The tantal/ak-74 style brake is pretty sweet.

Clean up any sharp edges, duracoat it, and be done. Wish I could get a drum for it though.

Just get a gas tube with a picatini rail on it for your red-dot sight, either an acog reflex or something like it. Maybe make sure the mag catch isn't too tight, some of the romaks were that way with chinese or russian mags. I'd leave everything else alone.

Good luck and good shooting!

Ah, regarding tight mag catches:

I had this problem with several NIW mags for my SAR2 - since some other mags locked and released easily, I knew the problem had to be with the individual magazines. Looking inside, I found that a cross-pin in the receiver actually bears against a slanted flat surface on the magazine spine directly above the catch-lug.

Since my magazines were all made of the rust-orange Bakelite plastic, the tight mags were easily fixed by gradually filing that slanted flat on each mag with a nail file; it literally took less than 2 minutes worth of filing on each of the offending magazines to get them to the point where they would lock in and release easily.

Definitely the aftermarket safety lever with the extra tab. The thing about it that I like is the bolt hold open feature.

One other minor point: " I think it's kind of cool when me and my $400 rifle outshoots some of the other guys and their $1200 ones."
Your rifle didn't outshoot their rifle.
You outshot them.
The rifle isn't the weapon, you are the weapon. Keep up the good work. Most rifles (including AKs) will amaze people when they are being fired by someone who knows what they are doing.
