improvised steel targets?

yesterday I found a big hunk of round steel that looks perfect for target practice. I have yet to try it out yet though.

It appears to be an old flywheel, probably from a tractor. It's about 18" across and about an inch thick. I doubt any gun I own could even put a dent into it.



Now I have gotten started thinking what else could make a good improvised option to shooting real steel targets. Real steel targets are pretty darned expensive compared to the free flywheel that I found.

Used plow discs can be had for free if you are in the right place at the right time.

Be sure you put a lot of distance between you and steel, regardless of the source.

If it's mild steel you'll put a rifle round right through it, without even really slowing it down.

Steel with a irregular surface can turn the bullet or fragments back at you.
If you are going to shoot it at a good distance with a rifle, that will penetrate through the steel, it may not be a big problem. Shooting it close up with pistol rounds could get you hurt.
Personally I would not use those flywheels.


I've been using steel plate for my backyard handgun and 22 range for over 30 years. Even shooting 6-7 yards is no problem as long as the steel is not pocked marked.
