I picked up a savage 10FCP heavy barrel .308 "sniper type" rifle with an HS precision stock yesterday.

I was not really in the market but I shouldered the weapon and I honestly have never had a stock fit me so comfortable and it made me feel very confident I could hit what I was aiming at...I know reality will set in later.

Then this trigger called the "accutrigger"...wow. to me fealt very crisp, no creep, and it is asjustable.

I always heard savage was low end stuff....Is this true...did I buy a dressed up pig?

Please let me know what I have done...
I'm 43 next week...when will I grow out of this???:confused::confused:

Thanks for any input.
God Bless,
Shane

savage is a good gun and normally very accurate for an out of the box gun

that rifle will serve you well

so as long as you got a good deal then you did good

give it up, sit back and enjoy your pleasures, you'll never grow out of it.
I'm 49 and have been buying and selling because there's always that gun that you just must have but don't have the room in the safe so you're forced to pick something and put it up for sale, it's a never ending circle....enjoy.

New Mag, provided you paid a low price for it (below retail if used), you did well. The Savages are known to be big-$ rifle killers! I've heard of them shooting as well as or better than rifles costing 2-3 times more! That's what I'm getting when I make the jump to center-fire rifles.

Didn't say what you paid for it so I can only say I own two Savage rifles and thoroughly enjoy them. One is a .17HMR and the other is a .308 "sniper" rifle. I have had absolutely no problems with them and they are extremely accurate shooters.

Many seem to be curious what I paid for it.

What do they go for?

This is a brand New gun...I paid $799. HOW does that price compare???

I failed to mention that I also fondled the comperable style remington 700 with the "thicker stock and barrel" and the fit was way off for me. I had to actually adjust my grip significantly to engage the trigger, that by the way, at least this reminigton was not near as nice as the savag.

In general regarding prices I don't sweat it too much if I end up paying $40-$50 more or less than others here on the forum...prices seem to vary quite a bit accross the nation and I wont even think about the few extra bucks a six months from now...
Maybe I'm just strange that way.
Thanks for your continued input.

Shane

Hey..thanks devil dog.
That is the model with the mcmillan stock. It has a list price much higher for some reason.
On the savage site the Mcmillan 10fcp lists for $1242 and the HS precision lists for $1028. Maybe because of the name???

I understand that the mcmillian is not bedded and HS is on this model...not sure why and frankly not sure what difference it makes.
Does anybody else???

Thanks again,
Shane

Please let me know what I have done...
Gun-wise you did fine.

Impulse-wise you failed. If you keep "mad money" saved up for such occaisions, then not a big problem. But if you spent money you shouldn't have, then there are ways to gain control of impulse spending.

Regardless, enjoy the rifle!

New Mag,

1st of all, Congrats on the new rifle. You'll find the Savage rifles to be very easy to get accurate with.

2nd, you never get to outgrow impulse.

3rd, save up money for bigger impulses.

BTG..thanks for the sound advice.

Fortunately one thing I did learn early on is that I keep an account of "mad Money" for Occasions such as this. That way I am NOT spending money I can't afford. Also now that the "mad money" account is depleated I have a rule that I can't "impulse" again until it is built back up.

It did take a painfull lesson (and a couple kids) in my twenties that caused me to implement this rule. So far it has been effective.

I have a simillar rifle in .260 with a Walther Lothar barrel, and a blueprinted action.
Ofcourse it consts about double of the US, but it is definetely sub MoA even with my crappy shooting and loads.

I have a Savage model 110 that is a tack driver. It did take a bit of work on my end and working up loads, but it is a great setup!

I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Savage makes a great barrel.

Savages are EXELLENT rifles they can smoke rifles costing much more. I'd take a savage over a remington any day but I dispise remingtons and never plan to own one anyways. You got a great deal I personally would rather have one in .223 than .308 because I'm cheap but thats not an option unfortunatly. the accutrigger is awsome I hav mine set as low as it will go:D.

You'll never beat the impulses your efforts are futile join the dark side...we've got cookies...mmm...

and now you have to decide on a scope. don't sell your rifle out by going with cheap optics. it's better to cry once.

impulse

Well I am going on 63 and when it comes to a new firearm I still haven't grown out of it. Hope i never do. Life's short. Enjoy it while you can.

Savages have shot really, really well since Coburn took over the factory. One of the few manufacturers that actually listens to competitors. But to a lot of people in the world, if they're uncle didn't say it in the 70's, it's not true. Most of the same people say the accutrigger is crap, since it isn't as good as their gunsmith tuned Jewell or Timney.

The day I stopped impulse buying was the day I ran out of money.

Now, I'm happier for it!

May I add that it was after I paid off all my bills when I finally realized that I need to shred the credit cards and close the accounts and not open any more.

Back to hunting.......

I already have a scope...it is a Leupold mark IV 3x9 yes in 3x9 that they closed out in 2006. I picked it up a while ago for $325.

I realize it may not be the ideal power range but is is a high quality scope at a GREAT price (I think anyway).

I am mounting and bore sighting it up right now.

Thanks for all the help and input.
Shane
