I am picking up a bolt action rifle today to build a long range "sniper" type... Just for the record..I have no misconceptions that I am a sniper.

I don't have a bolt action (other than Moisin Nag) and my safe just seems to want one ..or something else....

I went in with the intention of looking at and purchasing the Rem 700 police in .308 but found that the stock fit me wierd. When I grasp the rifle and then put my finger on the trigger it seems as if the trigger is way too close to my grip. In other words I have to release my grip and pull my hand back to get the first pad of my finger on the trigger.

Does anybody else have this issue with the remington???

I then picked up a Savage with a HS precision stock and if fit much better.

The Easy answer you would think be Get The Savage....But it is not the remington.....Do you know what I mean.
Is the savage the same quality?
Please help.....

OR
Should I just pass on the bolt action and go into the store and impulse spend the $1400 in store credit I have?

I have a Sig 556 but do not own and AR....Do I need Both Rifles:):)

HERE IS THE BIG QUESTION...
If you have $1400 to spend today at the gun shop what would you DO???

HELP A BROTHER OUT..

Thanks...Shane

Me being a cheapskate tightwad, I'd go with the Savage. Fit is one of the most important things about any rifle or shotgun.

From some ten years of moderating rifle threads and reading thousands of posts, I'd have to say that accuracy is reportedly about equal between Savage and Remington.

As far as "sniper", which is more important: Looks, or performance? If you get the performance from what appears to be "just another hunting rifle", why bother spending money on dress-up? (Unless you just want to, of course.)

FWIW, my old Weatherby medium-barreled '06 would hold inside one MOA at 500 yards, which I figured wasn't bad for a 70-year-old smoker/coffee drinker. I figured it was a pretty good old deer rifle...

I'll take a Savage any day. And if you want, you can probably put a Shilen Supermatch barrel on it, and still be under your limit. I just think Remington is coasting, most of their recent innovations are aesthic only in nature.

There is absolutely, 100% nothing wrong with "tactical" Savage long arms. Best accuracy per dollar, too, I reckon.

Go with a Savage action at least, then go to www.sharpshootersupply.com and order yourself a barrel and stock. You will be all smiles from that moment forward. Plus, going this method, you will have PLENTY of cash left to buy a low end Swarovski or mid-grade Zeiss scope if your budget is around $1400.

I agree with the Savage, but why switch the barrel right off the bat? :confused:Savage barrels are excellent and the main reason they're so accurate. Switch the stock? Sure, they can be crappy, but if it's comfortable, why switch it until you need to. But, at least wait until you can outshoot the rifle until you start swapping barrels.

I don't think anyone meant switch right off the bat, just pointing out how easy, and cost effective it was. Personally, I'd switch because I think 308s are boring.

2nd the boring! What do you intend to do with this rifle? Is this going to be a look-a-like sniper or do you intend to do some serious long range shooting?

The only problem I have ever had with Savages is the horrible plastic stock. Buying one with the excellent HS Precision stock neatly solves that trouble, and as pointed out leaves you money with which to buy a scope -- a critical part of an accurate rifle.
