I'd say this was my first black powder pistol purchase but I did buy one I never shot about 15 years ago. Living in Hawaii it was just too complicated and cumbersome at the time to get powder, caps, ect. Ended up selling it (actually made a couple bucks too) unfired after owning it for a couple years.

UPS dropped off a Cabela's Navy model yesterday with all the fixings I'll need to shoot it. Knowing very little about this area of shooting I've got a few questions to ask after reading the manuals that came with it.

It says to store the caps and powder in different locations. My question is how far away and how dangerous is this? Are the caps unstable or something? Do I need to move them away from my regular ammo too?

I'm wondering if I need to get a separate fire safe to keep the powder in???? Any suggestions on storage of the powder and caps would be appreciated.

Oh and if there's something about black powder pistols that would be helpful to a newbie I'd appreciate that too.

Thanks!

it's not so much the caps are unstable, they are crushable and no need to take the chance on it. just keep em in the tin they come in and the powder in the can it comes in and you should be fine. just don't stack one on the other.

for a lot, and I mean a lot on shooting blackpowder pistols go to the Cowboy Action Shooting Forum http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php it has all kinds of tips for blackpowder and guns

Caps and powder.

You don't need to move caps away from regular ammo, just don't keep whem too close to the black powder. Percussion caps are sensitive to everything but dirty looks and if one in the tin goes off, they all might. The flash isn't something you want near a pound of powder.

Having said that, I've never had a cap go off due to anything but firing the rifle. I'm not about to tempt fate, though.

Unless you have more than a couple pounds of powder, there's nothing special you need to do, other than leave it in the cans it came in. They are designed to pop the lids off if it ignites, rather than exploding. Don't defeat this safety measure by placing powder in a container that will retain pressure and explode.

The main thing with a bp gun is to clean it EVERY TIME you shoot it,and I mean right away. They will rust up in no time.
As 1911guy said, don't store it in a safe.If you have a fire, you want it to go whoosh, not BOOM. bp is an explosive, whereas regular powder is a propellant.
