We'll, got em loaded up tonight. I let my wife decide on 41.0-43.0gr or 41.5-43.5gr, and I loaded 41.0-43.0. looks like I might have some time Sunday to shoot!

Well I finally got out to shoot it today. 41.0, 41.5, and 42.0 were all between .9-1.2moa, which is VERY good for this rifle and a hunting bullet. 42.5 and 43.0 opened up to 2+moa, with 42.5 showing light extractor marks on 2 cases and 43.0 showing definite extractor marks on all 5. I think with a little playing with seating depth/ dialing charge weights it'll out shoot 4064.... Thinking I'm going to shoot groups from 41.0-41.8 x .2's to see if there's anything better in there!

Hey guys, been doing a little horse trading lately and ended up with 2lbs IMR 4166 in one of the trades. Data I have been able to find is minimal other than Hodgdon's website. I've been playing with 150 and 165 gr .308 loads for hunting in my slightly picky LR-308. It looks right next to 4064 on the burn rate chart, and 4064 is one of the 2 powders it seems to shoot well with. Anyone have much experience with 4166? Which would be a better bullet weight to try first?

TIA!
Sorry I’m late to the thread, but was wondering if you found the sweet spot for use of the 4166? I recently discovered it myself, and have a little experience as well as some very favorable results with it in my own .308 application.

Ive had good results with 4166. It shot about as accurate as Varget for me using 150gr SSTs, 150 prohunters, 165 SSTs and 165Hotcor. Imr 4064 with 165 gamekings is my most accurate 100 yd hunting load but imr 4166 is one of my favorites in 308.

My .308 seems to shoot best around the "low middle" of Hodgdon's load data with 4166. Right at about 41gr behind a 165 or 168 seems to be the best. Haven't tried it with 150's. This LR-308 is picky though, and doesn't seem to like to get out of "service rifle" load range.

It worked quite well with 150gr Hornady GMX and 152gr Lehigh Controlled Chaos rounds seated over 42.1gr of propellant. Weight sorting both the brass and the bullets got me sub MOA with a 16.5” barrel. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get velocities that day.

I use 42 grains with a 150 grain Hornady sp bullet. It shoots great in my Savage model12 with a 26” barrel.
