IMR 5010 Surplus BMG powder / 4570?

I have a few extra pounds of this and Im wondering if any one has ever loaded this in to a 45/70 cartridge. Or if it should even be tried. Conversion charts is what Im after.

Thanks

I dont know why you couldnt. IMR 5010 is SLOW. IF youve got a long barrel you'll probably be alright, a shorter one would make for quite a fireball.

I load it for my .50 BMG. At 28 bucks for 8 pounds, the price is hard to beat.

Thats what I was thinking.

Another ? Since we are using the same powder

What are your loads for your 50. I allways like to ask.

Im doing 215 grns with a 700ap right now. How far up have you gone for your rifle.

Im loading for a barrett99

I am using the same load, except with API. My intention was to go to 220, but after shooting the 215g I didnt see the need for it.

It shoots so well, I havent tried bumping it up. Fairly low recoil and very accurate.I grecently got 500 API (pulled surplus) for 70 bucks at a gunshow. They looked a bit rough, but I tumbled them and they shoot great.

I built a Maddi-Griffin clone with a few modifications..50 Pics.

H5010 is an *extremely* S L O W powder. The only thing any slower is made by Kingsford or designed for a 20mm.

It's burn rate is very close to H-870, H50BMG and it is slower than Retumbo, H-1000 and anything produced by IMR. In a 6.5-300WbyMag, it "acts" exactly the same as H-870 for me.

The 45-70 is an old, straightwalled cartridge that originally used blackpowder and works best with much faster powders. A longer barrel is not going to help much with this magnitude of difference, if at all.

Can I get 20 miles to work with my bicycle in a tuxedo? Well, yes, but . . . . :banghead:

IMHO, you will be much happier, and safer, with the correct powder.
