Hello Folks, I am new to the HIGHROAD. I am in dire need of some safe loads using the SMP5010 surplus powder sold by Wideners. When I bought the powder they said they would provide a "Magnum Rifle" load data sheet. It did not come with the powder. When I called them, they faxed me a load sheet for nothing but the .50 BMG. If anyone has some "TRIED AND TRUE AND SAFE" 7mm Rem Mag load data for this powder, I would greatly appreciate them sharing it with me. I have searched in vain for this data with no luck! I look forward to interacting those of this board. Thanks!

Welcome to THR!

You aren't finding any published data for the 7mm Rem because there isn't any using 5010. It wasn't sold as an 'over the counter' cannister powder and was only intended to be used in the 50 BMG, where it works very well indeed.

You CAN use it in the 7mm if you wish, but you will find your velocities down a bit from maximum because it really is too slow for best performance. Nice thing is it is likely safe to use as much as the case will hold and still get a bullet in.

Have read over the years about others using it as you intend with accurate results as the charge densities are near or at 100%. But your velocity will be low as well as the pressures developed. Be careful and realise that you are in semi-uncharted waters doing what you intend to do.

Still need a starting point.

Thanks Rob. I have been reloading for 30 years now and this is the first time I've stepped out on the ledge. I know I have read somewhere people were using this powder in 7mm Mag with good results, just can't remember where. Age is catching up to me I guess. I bought some because of the cost and Wideners offer of load data, which they could not provide. Maybe some one out there who has used this stuff will read my first post and give me a starting point load. Until then, it will stay in the cannister. My best,

I found a chart for military surplus powders on the net a good while ago. The data listed for 5010 and 7mm Mag only lists 120 and 150 gr bullets.
120 gr bullet----72 grains of 5010---2400fps
120------------77.8 maximum------2900
150gr bullet----71 gr 5010----------2500fps
150------------80 gr maximum------2700 fps
This data comes from a chart called "Cross-reference chart for Military surplus powders" that was posted somewhere on the net. I have not tested 5010 in 7mm Mag. The listings on this chart are accurate for surplus powders for the .223 Rem with 55 and 62 grain loads. The 5010 in your 7mm Mag will be very slow and I'd think it'd be hard to get enough in the case to cause pressure problems yet be careful.
