in defense of San Francisco

Think that's bad, you should hear em whine when they come up into the PNW and can't handle their first winter of PNW rain.
Maybe all the Cali ex-pats down in Bellvue whine, but I heard far more of y'all crying this year. I went to work every day this winter, snow/ice/rain/power outages bedamned.

Of course, I did it as much to prove that I wasn't a sissy Cali-boy as anything. And to be fair, Pugetroplis got hit with the worst weather on record this year.

After being stationed in Yuma, AZ for four years, this rain is just fine with me. I'll take 6 months of deluge over 8 months of triple digit temps.

I hafta agree, though about folks moving up here, then complaining. Seriously, how do they not know it's going to rain? It's not a big secret or anything. Rain and thePNW go hand-in-hand. If they didn't want the rain, they should have moved to Reno, Phoenix, SLC, etc.

"SF is the epitomy of EVERYTHING I dispise, loath and detest from it's politics, to the 'lunatic fringe' that pervades it's state and local government, and it's utter distain for all things decent and moral for. Recent news revealed that SF was the No.1 destination in the country for the homeless and drug addicted, due to it's "social programs"
obviously modeled after Amsterdam yet another steaming 'dung heap' of social misfits. SF You must be PROUD!! "

Ditto this and since they passed the gun ban on us mere mortals they won't get a penny from me or anyone I can talk into bypassing this SODOM!:fire:

tourist

My son and I visited San Fran last week. There are some interesting sights in that city. Lots of photo opportunities especially from Coit Tower and the Presidio. The round building is the Palace of Fine Arts.

If the only places you'll go are those places you can carry a gun you'll live a very closed off life... Try visiting foreign countries, you'll enjoy it, I promise.

I was born there and had a liver transplant there. No desire to go back, although I miss going to Giants and Niner games. :)

Come to Vegas instead. Think nekkid women. :D

My kids grew up in the exploritorium at the palace of fine arts,I worked and ate regularly around pier 39 . The Japanese tea gardens and the De Young museum , among others, are wonderful attractions. Chinatown was pretty nice too.
However the place has become mecca for the loonies, socialists and bums and is down the drain IMHO. I remember some pretty potentially violent incidents there, it always has been and still is a violent city, that were cooled down with the heat I was packing.;) Now the only thing being packed is Ghiradelli Chocolate:D and I don't want to be around there anymore- you can have my parking space!

I haven't enjoyed any foreign country I've been to. There's more in Texas than I could see in one human lifetime. No reason to go elsewhere.

Okay just a few reasons:

La Rambla, Barcelona
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Great Wall of China
scuba diving off the coast of thailand
sampling street food in shanghai

Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed texas the two times I was there, but seriously, there is more to the world than Dallas, Texas, even the United States.

Well I was born and raised and currently live in San Francisco and I love it.

This is a real nice city IF YOU DON'T GO CLOSE TO THE TOURIST SPOTS.

edit:

Unlike some other posters I have been many places besides San Francisco, including Russia. So I know what a real "radical socialist sh*thole" looks like, and recommend that others refrain from hyperbole when referring to my home.

I would LOVE to visit SF, there are many things I'd love to do there from the dining to cage diving off the farallons with great whites. As long as its politics remain the same however, I will show some self restraint and visit elsewhere.

I spent some time in San Francisco in November 2006 for a business trip. Overall, it was a pretty nice city with a lot to do, even if it did rain the whole time I was there!

I have never seen so many homeless people in one spot before and I am pretty well-traveled.

I too disagree with San Francisco's and California's political stance on many issues. However, If someone is going to limit his travels to places that he can carry, he is really missing out on a lot.

Yes, your state might have a lot to see, but it doesn't have the beer houses of Berlin, the beaches of Costa del Sol, the theaters of London, the museums of Chicago, the Bavarian Alps, the Golden Gate Bridge, etc.

That is really, really amazing.

Yeah yeah yeah... it mad a lot of news when it happened, but apparently the news hasn't mad it to your part of the world that Proposition H was overturned, is not in effect and frankly never had a chance of becoming law. The SFPD POA came out against it as "..completely unenforceable", the Mayor stated that (paraphrasing) "while I support the idea of getting guns off the streets, this is not the way to go about it." Even the SF Chronicle said it was a waste of time and money. It was nothing but a "feel good gesture" by the fuzzy thinkers on the City Council, and like all such proposed laws, by all politicians, everywhere, was more about public appearance than actual effectiveness.

Oh and I only came in here to say what Switchman did, and better than I since I tend to get worked up when people make blanket damming statements about my fair City and State.

Oh and if you live here, or have any interest in gun culture out here on the Left Coast, you really need to check out calguns.net. A finer group of dedicated, gun owning individuals, working within the ludicrous gun laws out here, you won't find.

What QBG said... SF doesn't get a fair shake on THR... the politics are a little wacky but I'd take SF over NYC, boston, DC, Chicago, or LA... Add up those 6 cities and you probably have 1/6 of the US GDP...

In defense of... ME!

The Critical Mass people are granola-sucking emaciated Morrissey-listening punks, goths, hippies, and what have you. They are whiners and not fighters, and so this thing with the minivan is an anomaly.

Hey now, I'm rather fond of granola, and still have my Smiths albums from the 80's!

Now, I'm not here to fight with you, I'm just here to whine.

(I don't cycle, but I do roll with .45 ACP, 12 gauge, and .45-70!)

:D

they may make a large percentage of the GNP, but if you add in how much money they use in federal and state funds on water, energy, illegal alien medical bills, state medical insurance and housing for those to poor to afford it in the economy, etc, I really dont think it would look so impressive. It is the same as being impressed by someone who makes $500,000.00 a year without looking at the fact that he spends $400,000.00 of it and is in debt up to his eye balls.

Guns are just a part of life, not life itself.

I had occassion to visit SF on business trips to Oakland. Every night I took the BART to SF for the evening. One of those rare times I didn't have a gun on me . . . and I still felt fine . . . even on the night I had to lay hands on a fella who was setting up on the gals I was traveling with. He and his two friends intended to relieve them of their purses.

The bums are obnoxious and are the most aggressive panhandlers I've seen in my life. But the city is beautiful, the food wonderful, and just a pleasant experience watching people. I wasn't happy that I had to smoke my pipe or a cigar outside when I wanted to have a drink, but I got used to it.

No Brakes23, I like your comment about LIBERALS. On another thread in which they were bashing LIBERALS I reminded them the most LIBERAL piece of paper ever written is The Constitution of the United States. I think the switch from LEFTIST to LIBERAL is something along the lines of George Orwell's NEWSPEAK in his book 1984

ROTFLMAO!

The politics of SF regarding gun ownership truly sadden me, but beyond that I've got to say that there is probably no city in the world I would rather spend time in. It is an absolutely amazing city, and every time I've been there I've been sad to leave.

Well said... very true.

THR bashes SF and California ....

.... geesh, some folks have too much time on their hands I'm thinking.

Born & raised in Oakland. Now when I visit friends & family, Oakland has really changed  As for SF...I too prefer the occassional visit vs. any kind of prolonged stay ;)

I keep hearing California is scheduled to fall into the sea; when's that supposed to happen anyway? For those of you thinking of escaping up here to the PNW, think pacific ring of fire, Seattle fault zone, Mt. St Helens, Mt. Rainier, no sunshine - ever. I keep reading on this forum about how great Texas is; I think you should go there.
