In order, what are the weakest to strongest rifle chamberings?

This subject get knocked around so often and no-one ever mentions distance. For example many will say a .30-30 is inadequate for elk, you need a .30-06. But at 50 yards a .30-30 delivers about as much energy as a .30-06 at 400 yds. Yet the same people who would say the 06 is fine at 400 would say the .30-30 is inadequate at 50. BTW, I too think the .30-30 is inadequate for elk but this does illustrate a point. Namely, people hunting at close range don't need as much gun as those hunting at long range.

In current commen production the lowest would the the 22CB then the 22BB, 22 Short, 22 Long THEN the 22 Long Rifle.:D

Sorry for putting the .308 on there twice...

yes, the 30-30 makes about 1700fpe, the .223 1200fpe, adn the 243, usually 2000fpe i think. the 7.62x39 is the nearly ballistic twin of teh 30-30, but with spitzer type bullets

oneshooter, you can fire 22cb and bb's out of a rifle? In cases like that, I am looking at what the rifle is chambered for. I know my .22lr will fire the short, long, and lr... but it is chambered for the lr.

woof,
That is why I am looking at out to 300y. I found a calc, so I can start playing a bit over the next couple of weeks. I agree with you on the .30-30 not being suitable for elk, but right now I am just looking at energy and not what should I hunt with it.

Yes you can, the rim and case specs are the same, only length, powder charge, and projectile are diffrent. There were rifles chambered for these cases, both by Remington and Winchester. :neener:

I thought this hasn't been made since WW2, and the figures will likely be outdated if that's the case.

not gonna doubt that. I labeled it as 'FMJ' but it was actually labeled 'solid'. Either way, it's your average .22LR. My bad lol

He cheated, that list is off of wikipedia...

I got mine of wiki, the other guy got his from a site, whatever. Laziness rocks. :p

still looking arouund at the figures. Some of it seemingly doesnt make sense to me, but I blame my inherent lack of math skills for that.

.243 Winchester MAXY Loads

2200 ft/lbs of muzzle energy represents the absolute maximum safe load possible from a quality-built, .243 Winchester bolt-action rifle. This type of extreme power is only available through CAREFUL handloading. Powder charges are dependent upon ambient temperature conditions. 2000 ft/lbs of muzzle energy is a factory-loaded given. If a ton of energy cannot take down one's quarry, opt for a .270 Winchester with 130 grain premium bullets and accept the sharper, heavier recoil to one's shoulder. Handloading is not for everyone, so if not, find a friend who can produce top-notch loads for one's rifle, and one will find one's rifle is truly up to THE task at hand. cliffy
