I live in Maryland and we are only allowed to purchase one handgun per 30 days. I found a great deal on Gunbroker and I want to buy it...

But, does anyone know if I can purchase the gun and just have it sit at my local FFL for a few weeks (I bought a gun a week ago) and then 23 days from now put in my paperwork?

In Maryland, you can get listed by the State Police as a "collector". (not the same as a C&R). It's my understanding that this waives the limit.

In Virginia, the 30 days is waived if you are a CHP holder. Or you can use it to your advantage... "Honey, the law says I have to buy a handgun every thirty days".

Check this older thread; most of the info there should still be correct:

I've done that sort of thing a lot here. If I'm in a "no buy" window, I'll pay for the gun, and the FFL will hold it until I'm free to do the paper work. At one time I had five pistols, paid for, sitting at one FFL without the paperwork being started. So it took me almost six months to pick them all up. This is, however, something I will do only with an FFL who knows me, and who I know, and with whom I've done business.

I've done this in California. Their law only says that you may not submit paperwork for the purchase if less than 30 days. (Private purchases also have to go through a FFL.) There is nothing to prohibit paying for a gun and holding it until the time has passed. But I would still ask your dealer.

Thanks for the info. My FFL is a small shop only open Tuesday thru Saturday so I figured I'd see if anyone else has done this.

Thanks.

If you want my best advice, you'd better PM me a link to that particular auction so that I can better understand what you're dealing with. Don't bid the price any higher, especially if you see a bidder jump in by the name of CoRoMo.:D;)

dmw16, mind listing who you are dealing with?

And to answer your question, yes you can buy it and have it sit in the shop. The FFL can send the paperwork into the MSP when the thirty days are up.

Consider getting "Collectors" status so you can get rid of that 30 days all together.

I'll get right on that :)

Wow.....all I have to say is, WOW......is this what we have to look forward to? WOW, this SUCKS.........

I'll agree with the folks that have you ask your FFL holder if they will sit on it.
In one case, yeah sure, no problem. Another NO, I don't have room in my safe.
Here in Va., if you don't have a CC permit, you can get a multiple handgun purchase permit, it's good for seven days. The downside is you have to go to the state police headquarters and convince the powers that be. When I did that, the woman said I need more than just "collector" in the reason section.
She then asked "what's a CZ?". They told me they would call when/if it went through. It did, two days later. I had to go pick it up. I then went straight to the FFL holder that was pi$$in' and moanin' about it. I had to go through a background check to pick it up, and they were closing soon, so I had to come back.
I did, everything worked out, but two trips to the HQ, and another background check.
