For Christmas my father-in-law surprised my wife a gift that my wife appreciated but needed some explaining from me for her to realize how much she should appreciate it. When my father-in-law retired from the Indiana State Police 30 years ago he was allowed to purchase for the sum of $1.00 (you read that right, one dollar) an unfired, 4” barreled, S&W M66 (no dash) Combat Magnum made in 1975 that is engraved with the ISP emblem and his ISP unit number. It was only after I explained to my wife the pinned barrel, recessed cylinder, wood grips, fit and finish, blue box, and unfired condition that she truly realized what an extraordinary gift she had received. I thought I would share this with everyone on THR that appreciates a beautiful K Frame.

I have a 66-1 I got from a retired KHP Trooper.

Unfortunately, Kansas wasn't near that fancy!

They just stamped K.H.P. on the frame with some crummy metal stamps!!

Nice engraving.

Usually these commemorative firearms have engraving that leaves me cold but her's is a beaut.

How cool that her Pop was able to keep it in the family while still in a position to enjoy the receiver's appreciation of an item no doubt important to him.

Now, I'll say it - It's a family heirloom... shoot the bejeepers outa it!.
 
If your wife enjoys shooting, I hope she and her Dad go to the range and enjoy it together.

If she doesn't shoot, I hope you can come up with a way to display that beautiful heirloom so that it can be admired and passed on to one of your lucky children. What a wonderful way to remember Grandpa!!!

She does and I will be taking my in-laws to the range in a couple of weeks. We will keep this pistol in the family forever. My father-in-law is a hellava guy. After retiring from the Indiana State Police he joined and retired from the Arizona Department of Public Safety (Highway Patrol). That's 40 years carrying a badge.

Unfortunately my father-in-law is deaf in one ear and has a hearing aid in the other. I am looking into buying some highest possible noise reducing electronic muffs for him to use so he does not go completely deaf and can hear range commands. Anyone have suggestions on these? I saw a pair on Midway's site for something like $300 that have 30db of reduction compared to the 22db of the muffs just under and above $100.

Thanks to all for your comments about the revolver, my wife is really impressed and appreciative now! When I show this thread to my 80 year old father-in-law he will be tickled pink!:)
 
Does he have any single daughters in the 28 to 38 year old age range? I'd like to get in on that action. :)

Sweet gun and a spectacular gift. Really a great heirloom.
 
Fathers sure love their daughters...I know I sure love mine. Congrats on a wonderful gift :) .
 
Interesting that your FIL went from Indiana State Police to the AZ (DPS) Highway Patrol. It was just a few weeks ago that I purchased an AZ HP 50 year commemorative (1931-1981) Model 66-1.
